Altitude, sunrise and a battery that outlasts the trek

Garmin Instinct 2 Solar

Solar top-up, barometric altimeter, weeks of battery

4.3 on Amazon

The barometric altimeter is the genuinely useful bit — watching your sleeping altitude is how acclimatisation stops being abstract; the solar charging is marketing more than mechanism on a wrist under a sleeve.

What you get

  • Weeks of battery, so it never competes for lodge power
  • Barometric altitude you can actually act on
  • Survives being knocked against rock

What it costs you

  • Solar contributes little under a jacket cuff
  • Monochrome screen looks dated
  • Pulse-oximeter readings at altitude are indicative at best — do not make decisions on them

Do not buy this if: Anyone who would treat its SpO2 number as a medical reading. It is not one.

Treks we recommend this for

Not every route needs it. These are the ones where our guides would put it on your list.

The alternatives

Everything else we recommend in watches & gps, including the ones we think suit a different trekker.
