Best Time to Trek Makalu & Api: Seasons, Weather & When to Go (2026)
Remote treks demand the right timing. Here's exactly when to trek Makalu Base Camp and Api Himal — and the seasons to avoid — for clear skies and safe trails.

On a popular trail, bad timing means a wet, cloudy week. On a remote trek like Makalu or Api Himal, the wrong season can mean blocked passes and no way through. Here is exactly when to go — and when not to.

The short answer
- Best: Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–November)
- Autumn brings the clearest skies and most stable weather
- Spring adds rhododendron blooms and warmer days
- Avoid: deep winter (cold, snow) and the summer monsoon (rain, leeches, cloud)
Season by season
Autumn is the gold standard for both treks: post-monsoon air gives the sharpest mountain views and the most reliable conditions. Spring is the close second — longer days, blooming forests, and good visibility, with a little more haze later on. Winter is possible at lower elevations but the high camps get bitterly cold and snow can shut routes. The monsoon (June–August) is best skipped for these regions: heavy rain, leeches in the forest, landslide-prone roads and clouded peaks.
| Season | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Excellent — blooms, warm, clear |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Best — clearest, most stable |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Cold; high routes may be snowed in |
| Monsoon (Jun–Aug) | Avoid — wet, leeches, cloud |
