Nepal's Trails Get the Headlines. Its Zipline, Bungee and Paragliding Break World Records.

Long before you clip into a via ferrata anywhere else, Pokhara already has the world's second-highest bungee jump, one of its steepest ziplines, and a paragliding launch pad at 1,592 metres.

Ask why people fly to Nepal and most will say Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit. Fair enough — but three of the numbers below don't belong to any trail. They belong to a zipline, two bungee platforms and a paragliding launch pad, and they're not modest.

Key facts

  • Pokhara's ZipFlyer drops 600 metres over 1.8km at up to 120km/h — recognised by National Geographic and Red Bull among the world's best ziplines
  • The Kushma Bungee near Pokhara is 228 metres — the world's second-highest bungee jump, beaten only by Macau Tower
  • Tandem paragliding launches from Sarangkot at 1,592 metres and can thermal up to 2,900 metres before a 25–30 minute descent to Phewa Lake
  • The Last Resort's Bhote Koshi bungee (160 metres) has run since 1999 and remains Asia's third-highest

Pokhara markets itself as Nepal's adventure capital and, on the numbers, it earns the title. The ZipFlyer starts at a 56-degree incline — steep enough that operators bill it as the world's steepest — and riders cover the 1.8km line in well under two minutes, hitting speeds that rival a highway. It sits above the same Seti River gorge that trekkers cross on the way into the Annapurna foothills, which means you can be ziplining in the morning and starting a trek to Ghandruk or Ghorepani by afternoon.

The bungee scene alone has two genuinely world-class sites. The Last Resort, three hours from Kathmandu near the Tibet border, has been dropping jumpers 160 metres off a Swiss-engineered suspension bridge over the Bhote Koshi gorge since 1999 — long enough to have become a rite of passage for backpackers heading to or from the Chinese border. Newer and taller is the Kushma Bungee over the Kali Gandaki river, a 228-metre free fall of roughly 8.5 seconds from a 520-metre suspension bridge — beaten worldwide only by Macau Tower's AJ Hackett jump at around 233 metres.

Then there's paragliding, which doesn't need a superlative to sell itself. Pilots launch from Sarangkot at 1,592 metres, catch thermals off the surrounding ridgelines to climb as high as 2,900 metres, then glide roughly 25 to 30 minutes down to a landing strip on the shore of Phewa Lake, a five-minute walk from Lakeside's cafes. On a clear morning the entire Annapurna range — Machapuchare, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli — sits directly ahead of you the whole flight, not glimpsed between clouds from a plane window but close enough to feel close.

What this means for trekkers

What this means for you

None of this requires giving up a trekking trip — it requires adding a day or two either side of one. Pokhara is the gateway town for the Annapurna region anyway, so a bungee jump, a paraglide or a zip-flight slots naturally before or after a trek without extra flights or long transfers. It's also a good option for a travel companion who isn't up for multi-day trekking: they can get an equally big Himalaya story from a single adrenaline morning in Pokhara.

Rafting and wildlife add two more legitimate 'beyond the trails' days: the Trisuli River runs a manageable Class III/III+ near Kathmandu with no experience required, while Chitwan National Park's rhino and tiger safaris are a full change of ecosystem — jungle and grassland instead of alpine trail — just a few hours south. Put together, a Nepal trip built around one trek plus two or three of these stops covers more of the country's terrain, in more ways, than most first-time visitors realise is possible in a single visit.
