One of the Deepest Gorges on Earth Is in Nepal — and You Can Bungee Jump Into It

Between two of the fourteen highest mountains on Earth runs a canyon so deep that geologists still argue over exactly how deep it goes. The Kali Gandaki Gorge, squeezed between Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and Annapurna I (8,091m) in central Nepal, plunges an estimated 5,571 metres from summit to riverbed — deeper than the Grand Canyon three times over, and commonly ranked among the deepest gorges on the planet. A few years ago, an operator strung a bungee cord across it. Now you can jump into the record.

Our guides who grew up walking the Kali Gandaki valley — it's the old salt-trade route, and now the road the classic Annapurna Circuit follows north from Beni toward Jomsom and Mustang — rarely think of it as a "gorge" in the tourist-brochure sense. It's simply the way through. But stand on one of the suspension bridges that cross it and look down, and the numbers catch up with you: this ravine cuts deeper than most canyons trekkers have ever heard of.

The reason it exists at all is stranger than its depth. The Kali Gandaki River is believed to be older than the Himalaya. As the Indian and Eurasian plates collided and pushed the mountains skyward over tens of millions of years, the river kept cutting down through the rising rock at roughly the pace the land rose beneath it — a process geologists call antecedent drainage. The mountains grew up around a river that refused to be diverted, leaving one continuous cut running from two of the world's ten highest peaks down to a valley floor barely 2,520m above sea level.

Even Wikipedia's own entry hedges on the ranking — it notes Tibet's Yarlung Tsangpo canyon is sometimes cited as the world's single deepest, since the two are measured slightly differently (peak-to-river across a wide valley, versus rim-to-floor). What isn't disputed is that the Kali Gandaki valley is the deepest gap between two 8,000m peaks anywhere on Earth — and that it now hosts one of the tallest bungee jumps most Western trekkers will ever hear of.

The jump: 228 metres over the gorge that made it famous

The Kushma Bungee opened on a 520-metre suspension bridge over the Kali Gandaki, about 62km from Pokhara on the Beni–Baglung road. Jumpers get roughly a four-second free fall before the cord catches, dropping toward the river the valley itself took tens of millions of years to carve. The operator, The Cliff Nepal, markets it as the world's second-highest bungee jump — that claim depends which list you check, but the 228m platform genuinely sits among the tallest anywhere.

That table settles an argument most trekkers don't realise exists: Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa is usually billed as the world's highest bridge-based bungee. Kushma's platform, also strung from a bridge over a gorge, jumps from higher.

A standard jump runs NPR 7,500 (about $56), with a couple's tandem jump at NPR 13,500 — the operator charges Nepalis and foreigners the same rate, unusual for an adventure operator in Nepal. It runs daily from 9am, and most visitors combine it with a stop at nearby Tatopani's hot springs or a longer loop through the Annapurna region.

What this means for your trip

For trekkers who'd rather see the gorge from a trail than a free fall, the Annapurna Circuit still runs straight through it, climbing from the subtropical valley floor near Tatopani up past Jomsom into the high desert of Mustang in a matter of days — one of the most dramatic elevation changes on any walking route in the world. For a lower-key adrenaline day near Pokhara that skips the cord entirely, the zip-flyer looks down on the same Annapurna skyline.
