Getting there
The journey itself is part of the adventure. Most itineraries fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi in the far-western lowlands, then drive north into the hills toward Darchula — the trailhead region. (Note: Api Base Camp is firmly in Nepal's Darchula district, not the similarly named town across the Indian border.) From there the trail climbs through forest and traditional villages into the Api Nampa Conservation Area and up to the alpine meadows beneath Api's ice walls.
Permits, cost & difficulty
You will need an Api Nampa Conservation Area permit and a licensed guide. Because the region has almost no trekking infrastructure, this is a fully supported, crew-based trip — expect a price in the US$2,400+ range. The trekking itself is moderately challenging rather than extreme, but the remoteness raises the commitment level: this is true frontier travel.
