How Much Does a Year of Travel Actually Cost in 2026? (Real Budgets by Style & Region)

A full year of travel in 2026 costs anywhere from roughly $8,000 to over $50,000 per person — and the single biggest variable is not how you travel, but where. Spend the year across Southeast Asia and South Asia and a comfortable backpacker gets by on about $1,000 to $1,500 a month; spend it in Western Europe, Japan or Australia and the same lifestyle costs three to four times as much. Here is what the numbers actually look like in 2026, broken down by travel style and by region, and where a country like Nepal fits into a round-the-world budget.

The three budget styles

Most long-term travellers fall into one of three spending brackets. The daily figures below are blended across the regions a typical route touches; the annual totals assume roughly a year on the road and, crucially, are driven far more by your choice of countries than by whether you eat street food or sit-down meals.

Within a day's spend, the split is fairly consistent worldwide: roughly 40% on accommodation, a little over 20% on food and drink, close to 20% on local transport, and around 15% on activities and tours, with the rest going on SIM cards, laundry and small fees. Dorm beds run about $10–$40 a night, private guesthouse rooms $20–$60, and budget hotels $40–$80, depending heavily on the country.

Because it is a lump sum rather than a daily cost, it is left out of nearly every per-day and per-month budget you will read — plan for it as its own line.

Travel insurance. Long-term, nomad-style travel insurance is commonly quoted from around $45 a month upward, depending on your age, home country and the level of medical and evacuation cover you choose. For adventure travel — and especially high-altitude trekking — check that your policy covers the activity and the altitude before you go, not after.

Where Nepal fits into a round-the-world year

Nepal is one of the best-value legs of any long trip. Off the trail, Kathmandu and Pokhara sit firmly in that $25–$45-a-day South Asia band — guesthouse rooms, dal bhat and local buses cost a fraction of what the same day costs in Europe.
