Kanchenjunga Base Camp: the World's Third-Highest Peak Almost No One Treks
While the crowds chase Everest, Kanchenjunga — the planet's third-highest mountain — guards one of Nepal's wildest, most remote treks. Here's why 2026 is its moment.

As Nepal's leadership pushes the world to look beyond Everest and Annapurna, one giant deserves far more attention than it gets: Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, in Nepal's remote far east. Its base camp trek is one of the most spectacular — and least crowded — long treks anywhere in the Himalaya.
Kanchenjunga — key facts
- Peak: Kanchenjunga, 8,586m — the world's 3rd-highest
- Location: far-eastern Nepal, on the Sikkim (India) border
- Duration: around 20–22 days
- Restricted area: special permit + a registered operator required
- Base camps: Pangpema (north, ~5,140m) & Oktang (south)
Why it is so special
Kanchenjunga is a true expedition trek: weeks of walking through rhododendron forest, remote villages and high glacial valleys to stand beneath a wall of 8,000m ice almost no one else will see that season. Because it is a restricted area, you must trek with a registered operator and a minimum group — which keeps numbers low and the wilderness intact. It is long, committing and unforgettable.
| Trek | Peak | Days |
