Nepal Is Currently Living in the Year 2083 — and Its Clocks Are 45 Minutes Off Everyone Else's

Nepal runs on a calendar roughly 57 years ahead of the one you use, and a time zone so specific it exists in only three places on Earth. Neither is a typo.

Land in Kathmandu and set your phone to local time, and two things will look wrong. First, the clock will be a strange number of minutes off whatever you expected — Nepal is on UTC+5:45, a 45-minute offset that exists in only three time zones on the entire planet. Second, if you glance at a Nepali newspaper's date line or a temple's festival calendar, the year won't be 2026. It'll be 2083.

Key facts

  • Nepal's official calendar, Bikram Sambat, is currently in the year 2083
  • That's roughly 56–57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, depending on the month
  • Nepal Standard Time is UTC+5:45 — adopted on 1 January 1956, replacing the Indian-aligned UTC+5:30
  • It's one of only three 45-minute-offset time zones used anywhere in the world

The year gap isn't a rounding error or a religious quirk with no logic to it — it comes down to which starting point each calendar counts from. The Gregorian calendar counts forward from year 1 AD. Bikram Sambat counts forward from 57 BCE, the year King Vikramaditya of Ujjain is said to have founded the era after defeating an invading army. Run that math forward and Nepal's new year — which falls in mid-April, not January — lands the country 56 to 57 years ahead of the West, depending on whether you're asking before or after that April reset.

The clock is a separate story. Until 1956, Nepal ran on the same time as India: UTC+5:30. On 1 January 1956, Nepal Standard Time shifted 15 minutes forward to UTC+5:45 — not a rounding convenience, but a deliberate break from its neighbour's clock. Nepal was never colonised, and keeping a time zone distinct from India's is widely cited by Nepali commentators as a quiet, literal assertion of that independence: a country of 30 million wedged between two giants, still running on its own minute.

Nepal time vs. the world
PlaceUTC offset
Nepal (NPT)+5:45
India / Sri Lanka+5:30
Australian Central Western Time+8:45 (unofficial)
Chatham Islands, New Zealand+12:45

That makes Nepal one of only three 45-minute-offset time zones left in use anywhere on Earth — the others sit in remote New Zealand and an unofficial pocket of Western Australia. Combined with the Bikram Sambat calendar, it means a country of temples, mountains and 600,000-plus annual foreign visitors is, quite literally, running on its own clock and its own year, simultaneously off by an odd 15 minutes from one border and by nearly six decades from the calendar most of its guests grew up on.

What this means for trekkers

What this means for you

In practice: double-check flight and permit office times against Nepal Standard Time specifically, not India's — a 15-minute gap has caught out plenty of travellers connecting through Delhi. And if a guesthouse owner or permit officer quotes you a date in the Nepali calendar (common on receipts and government paperwork), don't panic at the four-digit jump — just add roughly 56–57 years to translate it back to the year you're used to.

It's a small, strange detail that tends to stick with people longer than most of what they photograph — a country that measured out its own independence in minutes, and is, by its own calendar, already most of a lifetime into the future. Our guides get asked about it on nearly every trip. If it's the kind of thing that makes you want to see the country that thought of it, our 3-day Kathmandu Valley cultural tour and 7-day Nepal classic tour both start right where the clock does, in Kathmandu's old royal squares.
