Brazil E-Visa 2026: US, Canadian and Australian Tourists Now Need One Again

If a Brazil trip is on your list and you carry a US, Canadian or Australian passport, there is one change you cannot skip in 2026: you need a visa again. Brazil has reintroduced an electronic visa (e-visa) for tourists from these three countries, ending the visa-free entry they had enjoyed since 2019. The requirement is now in force, it is applied for online before you fly, and it is the single most common thing travellers from these countries get caught out by when planning a South America leg.

The short version: this is a reciprocity measure. Brazil's citizens need a visa to visit the United States, Canada and Australia, so Brazil now asks the same of their travellers. Most other nationalities are unaffected and can still enter Brazil visa-free for tourism.

What actually changed, and why

Brazil spent years toggling this policy. It first offered a simplified e-visa to Americans, Canadians and Australians in 2018, then scrapped the requirement entirely in June 2019 to encourage tourism, waving all three nationalities (plus Japan) straight in. The reintroduction was announced, then delayed more than once, before finally taking effect on 10 April 2025. So if you visited Brazil in 2019, 2022 or 2023 without a visa, your memory is correct — and now out of date.

The logic is reciprocity, not hostility. Brazil's position is that its own citizens face a visa process to reach the US, Canada and Australia, and it now mirrors that. Practically, for you, it means one extra online step and a bit of lead time before departure.

First, apply well ahead of your flight — processing is not instant, and leaving it to the airport is not an option because there is no tourist visa on arrival for these passports. Second, verify the fee, the number of entries, the validity window and the maximum stay per visit directly on the official portal at the time you apply, rather than trusting a screenshot from a forum.
