Everest Base Camp vs Annapurna Base Camp: Which Trek Actually Suits You? (2026)

Both routes end at a wall of ice under an 8,000-metre peak, but the honest answer to which one you should book comes down to your fitness, your calendar and your tolerance for altitude — not marketing copy.

If you have 12 to 14 days, solid fitness and want to walk to the foot of the world's highest mountain, book Everest Base Camp (EBC). If you have 7 to 9 days, prefer green terraced hillsides and rhododendron forest to grey glacial moraine, or you are nervous about altitude, book Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). That is the short version. Here is the honest breakdown behind it, from a Pokhara-based operator who runs both routes every season.

Key facts

  • Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364m; the trek typically runs 12-14 days round trip from Kathmandu.
  • Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m — over 1,200m lower — and typically runs 7-9 days round trip from Pokhara.
  • Standard guided EBC packages run roughly $1,250-$1,800; standard ABC packages run roughly $800-$1,200.
  • Around 40-50% of EBC trekkers report some altitude sickness symptoms; ABC's lower ceiling means the risk is markedly smaller.

The real difficulty gap

Both treks are teahouse walks — no ropes, no technical climbing, roughly 4-7 hours of walking a day. The difference is what happens above 3,500m. EBC trekkers fly into Lukla at 2,860m and climb more than 2,500 vertical metres over the following week and a half, funnelled through the single Khumbu valley. ABC's approach is gentler: you gain and lose altitude repeatedly through Chhomrong and the Modi Khola gorge before the final push into the Annapurna Sanctuary, and you are back down below 3,500m again within two to three days of reaching the top. That faster round trip at lower altitude is precisely why ABC carries meaningfully less altitude-sickness risk than EBC, according to Nepal trekking-medicine guidance widely cited by operators on both routes.

What this means for your booking

What this means for you

Book EBC if: you have two weeks free, you are reasonably fit, and the goal is the single most iconic trek on Earth with a story to match. Book ABC if: your holiday budget is a week, you want a real Himalayan trek without the flight-cancellation risk of Lukla, or you are trekking with a first-timer, an older parent, or anyone who wants a gentler introduction to altitude. Doing both eventually is common among our repeat clients — most start with ABC and come back for EBC once they know how their body handles altitude.

The trade-offs nobody puts in the brochure

EBC's biggest practical risk is not altitude, it's Lukla. The airstrip sits at 2,860m in a mountain bowl and is routinely fogged in during shoulder-season mornings; a two- or three-day weather delay is common enough that most operators build a buffer day into the 14-day itinerary. ABC has no such choke point — it's a drive, not a flight — which makes it the more reliable option if your travel dates are fixed. On the other hand, EBC gives you Namche Bazaar, the Tengboche monastery, and views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam in one frame — a landscape ABC, for all its beauty, doesn't match. If money and time are equal and you just want the harder, more famous walk, EBC wins. If you want the better risk-adjusted trek for the days you actually have, ABC usually wins.

Either way, go with a properly permitted, guide-led trip — both routes now require it. Compare our full 14-day EBC itinerary against the 9-day ABC trek, or start smaller with the short ABC trek from Pokhara if a week is all you have.
