Since Nepal's PM put Makalu Base Camp in the global spotlight, American adventurers have been asking the obvious question: how do I actually do this? Good news — for a fit US trekker, the world's fifth-highest mountain is far more reachable than it looks. Here's the plan.
For US trekkers — the essentials
- Getting there: fly US → Kathmandu (via the Gulf or East Asia), then a short flight to Tumlingtar
- Visa: Nepal visa on arrival for US passport holders

The plan, step by step
Most Americans route through a Gulf hub (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi) or an Asian one to reach Kathmandu, where your Nepal visa is issued on arrival. From there it's a short domestic flight to Tumlingtar and a drive to the trailhead. Because Makalu is remote with basic lodging up high, this is a guided, fully supported trip — permits, porters, food and flights handled. Add a couple of buffer days for the long-haul travel and the notoriously weather-dependent mountain flights.
