Makalu vs Everest Base Camp: Which Trek Should You Do in 2026?

Everest Base Camp is the icon; Makalu is the wild one. Crowds vs solitude, teahouses vs tents, the world's highest vs the fifth-highest. Here's how to choose your 2026 trek.

At a glance

Two eastern-Nepal treks, two completely different experiences. Everest Base Camp is the most famous trek on Earth; Makalu Base Camp — newly in the spotlight after Nepal's PM featured it — is one of its wildest and emptiest. If you are choosing between them for 2026, here is the honest comparison.

The quick verdict

  • Choose Everest Base Camp for the icon, the Sherpa culture and easier logistics
  • Choose Makalu for raw wilderness and near-total solitude
  • EBC has teahouses throughout; Makalu goes basic and remote up high
  • Both need fitness and acclimatisation; neither needs climbing skills

Crowds vs solitude

The biggest difference is people. Everest Base Camp can see hundreds of trekkers a day in peak season; Makalu's base camp receives only a few hundred trekkers a year. EBC rewards you with the world's most storied trail, Namche Bazaar, and the comfort of lodges every couple of hours. Makalu rewards you with the feeling that the mountains are entirely yours — at the cost of comfort, easy access and a quick way out.
