About US$523 per person for a standard 10-day trek: the Restricted Area Permit is now US$50 per person per day (≈ US$500 for 10 days inside the zone), and the ACAP is NPR 3,000 (≈ US$23). Shorter trips cost proportionally less — a 5-day visit is about US$250 in RAP. The old US$500/10-day flat fee was scrapped in late 2025.
Why is the Upper Mustang permit so expensive?+
Upper Mustang is a tightly protected restricted area — the former Kingdom of Lo. At US$50 per person per day the Restricted Area Permit is deliberately high to limit numbers and protect its fragile environment and Tibetan-Buddhist culture. Since the 2025 shift to a daily rate, shorter trips are cheaper, while a full 10-day trek still costs about US$500.
Do I need a guide for Upper Mustang? Can I go solo?+
A licensed guide hired through a registered agency is still required for Upper Mustang. However, the old rule requiring a minimum of two trekkers was scrapped in March 2026, so solo travellers can now obtain the permit (with a guide). Can I trek Upper Mustang in the monsoon?+
Yes — Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain shadow and stays largely dry through the monsoon (June–August), making it one of the few regions trekkable in the wet season, as well as in spring and autumn.
Can I get the Upper Mustang permits online in 2026?+
Partly. The ACAP conservation permit can be pre-paid through the NTNC online e-permit portal (live since October 2024). But the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit — now US$50 per person per day — is issued only through a registered trekking agency in Kathmandu, never online or to individuals. A licensed guide is required, so the simplest route is to have your agency arrange both permits before you fly to Jomsom.
