Questions people ask

What do the four US travel advisory levels mean?

Level 1 is exercise normal precautions, Level 2 is exercise increased caution, Level 3 is reconsider travel, and Level 4 is do not travel. Many countries carry a country-wide level plus higher levels for specific regions, so read the full advisory for the area you are going to, not only the headline number.

Does the UK use levels like the US?

No. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) does not number its advice. When it warns, it advises against all travel or against all but essential travel, to a whole country or to parts of it. Most countries carry no such warning at all, only general safety advice.

Does a travel advisory cancel my travel insurance?

It can. Many UK policies stop covering you in a country or area where the FCDO advises against all or all but essential travel, and many US and Australian policies exclude Level 4 destinations or events that were known when you bought the policy. Check your policy wording before you go, and buy cover early.

How often is this page updated?

The page re-reads the US State Department feed and the UK GOV.UK travel advice data at least every ten minutes, and a tab left open refreshes itself. Each change shows when the government published it.

Why is Australia’s Smartraveller not shown live?

Smartraveller blocks automated reading of its pages, so we cannot load its levels reliably. We link straight to it instead. Its four levels mirror the US scale: exercise normal safety precautions, exercise a high degree of caution, reconsider your need to travel, and do not travel.

Sources, read live: the US State Department travel advisories feed and UK FCDO foreign travel advice on GOV.UK. UK warning levels are shown for countries updated in the past week; open any country for the full advice. We summarise, we do not change what they say.
