The Complete 2026 Guide

GOKYO LAKES TREK

The Real Challenge

How Hard Is Gokyo?

1

High altitude

Gokyo Ri reaches 5,357m. Comparable to Everest Base Camp in altitude and commitment; proper acclimatisation is essential.

2

The Gokyo Ri climb

A steep pre-dawn ascent for sunrise is the toughest part, rewarded by the region's best panorama.

3

Train for it

8–12 weeks of cardio, leg strength, and hill walking recommended, as for EBC.

The View

The Best Panorama in Nepal

From the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m) you see four of the world’s six highest mountains in one sweep — Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) — above the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalaya. Many seasoned trekkers rate it as a finer view than Kala Patthar on the standard EBC trek.

Quieter & Higher Views

Gokyo vs Everest Base Camp

Gokyo is quieter and more serene than the busy EBC trail, and Gokyo Ri arguably offers a better panorama than Kala Patthar. EBC is the iconic pilgrimage to Base Camp itself. Many combine both via the Cho La pass.

Common Questions

Gokyo Lakes Trek FAQ

How long is the Gokyo Lakes trek?

The Gokyo Lakes trek takes 12–14 days round trip from Lukla, including acclimatisation. We recommend 1–2 buffer days for possible Lukla flight delays. Linking Gokyo with Everest Base Camp via the Cho La pass extends it to around 16–18 days.

How much does the Gokyo Lakes trek cost?

A budget Gokyo trek costs $1,200–1,700 per person (in a 2-person group), including the Lukla flight, permits, guide, and teahouse accommodation. Comfort-level trips run $2,000–3,000. It's similar in cost to Everest Base Camp.

How difficult is the Gokyo Lakes trek?

Gokyo is strenuous and high-altitude, reaching 5,357m at Gokyo Ri — comparable to Everest Base Camp in commitment. It's non-technical if done on its own, but the altitude and the steep Gokyo Ri ascent demand good fitness and proper acclimatisation.

Is Gokyo Ri better than Kala Patthar?

Many trekkers think so. Gokyo Ri (5,357m) offers a sweeping panorama of four 8,000m peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — above the turquoise lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier. Kala Patthar gives the classic close-up of Everest itself. Both are spectacular; Gokyo Ri is the broader view and far less crowded.

What is the best time for the Gokyo Lakes trek?

October–November (autumn) for the clearest skies and the bluest lakes, and March–May (spring) for warmer weather and good views. Winter is very cold with possible frozen lakes; the monsoon brings cloud and frequent Lukla flight cancellations.

Can I combine Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp?

Yes — the popular combination links Gokyo and EBC over the Cho La pass (5,420m), giving you the lakes, Gokyo Ri, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar in one loop of around 16–18 days. It requires more time, fitness, and acclimatisation but is the ultimate Everest-region trek short of the full Three Passes.
