What makes Gokyo Valley a compelling alternative to Everest Base Camp?

How many lakes are there and can I visit all of them?

There are six Gokyo lakes. The Third Lake (Dudh Pokhari, 4,700m) by Gokyo village is the most famous. The 12-day itinerary includes time to hike to the Fourth and Fifth lakes along the edge of Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's largest glacier — for increasingly remote and dramatic scenery.

What permits are needed?

You need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit ($30) and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee ($2), obtainable in Kathmandu or at the Monjo checkpoint. No restricted area permits are required — the same permits as the standard EBC trek.

How do I get to the trailhead?

Fly Kathmandu to Lukla (35 min), then trek north through Namche Bazaar and Dole to Gokyo. Lukla flights are weather-dependent. Build buffer days around your flights — delays of 1–2 days are not uncommon, especially early morning in October.

Can Gokyo Valley be combined with Everest Base Camp?

Yes — the Cho La Pass (5,420m) connects Gokyo with the main EBC trail. The 20-day Three High Passes trek includes both. The Gokyo-only route suits those wanting Everest's finest views without the most crowded sections of the Khumbu Valley.

What is accommodation like in Gokyo village?

Gokyo has several well-run teahouses with twin rooms, hot showers, and phone charging. Food is standard Khumbu teahouse — dal bhat, pasta, soup, porridge. Prices increase with altitude. Book ahead in peak autumn weeks (Oct–Nov) as rooms fill quickly.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Prime season. October is perfect — clear skies, stable weather, 4–6 week dry window. November gets cold at altitude but still excellent. EBC trail at its busiest.

Low: -10°C at EBC High: 15°C Namche October: minimal. November: possible above 5,000 m

Spring (Mar–May)

Climbing season — expeditions on Everest. Good trekking weather. Rhododendrons in Namche area. Pre-monsoon cloud builds in afternoon from May. Slightly warmer than autumn.

Low: -8°C at EBC High: 18°C Namche March: possible at pass level. May: mostly clear

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Very cold. Khumbu trails remain open but temperatures extreme at EBC (-20°C+). Experienced cold-weather trekkers only. Fewer crowds. Lodges may be closed above Namche.

Low: -25°C at EBC High: 5°C Namche Heavy above 5,000 m

Monsoon (Jun–Aug)

Not recommended. Trails wet and unstable. Cloud cover obscures mountain views. Risk of landslides on lower sections.

The Gokyo route to Everest region was the best decision I made. Our agency arranged everything perfectly — the Lukla flights, the permits, a brilliant Sherpa guide named Karma who had grown up in the Khumbu. The lakes are a completely different world to anything you've seen before — deep turquoise sitting under the flanks of Cho Oyu at 8,000m. Gokyo Ri at sunrise with six 8,000m peaks visible simultaneously... I just stood there for an hour. Cannot say enough good things about the team.
