What permits are needed for this trek?

You need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card — about NPR 5,000 (about US$38) combined. Your guide arranges both before departure. Bring your passport and two passport-size photos.

How fit do I need to be for 3 days to Poon Hill?

The trek is rated easy but the 3-day format is more demanding per day than the 4- or 5-day versions since the same elevation is covered in less time. Expect 5–7 hours of walking on day 2. Basic walking fitness is sufficient, but trekkers who exercise regularly will find it more comfortable.

You see the same viewpoint and core highlights but at a faster pace with less time in the villages. If your schedule allows, we recommend the 4-day version for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

What is the best time of year for this trek?

October–November and March–April are ideal — clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures. March–April adds the bonus of rhododendron blooms. Monsoon (June–September) is not recommended due to slippery trails, leeches, and persistent cloud cover obscuring the views.

Best season. Crystal-clear skies, stable weather, spectacular mountain views. Peak crowds on EBC and ABC trails.

Spring (Mar–May)

Second-best season. Rhododendrons in bloom, good visibility. Slightly warmer than autumn. Pre-monsoon clouds build in afternoon.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Cold but uncrowded. Clear skies and great views. High passes may be snowed-in. Lower altitude treks (Ghorepani, Langtang lower) remain open.

Monsoon (Jun–Aug)

Wet season. Trails slippery, leeches on lower sections, views often obscured. Not recommended except for rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang).

Three days felt short but it was absolutely worth it. Managed to fit this in between a conference in Kathmandu and my flight home. The team organised everything at 48 hours' notice — guide, permits, transport, accommodation. Our guide Ram walked at exactly my pace, never rushing. Ghorepani village in the mist at dusk was incredibly atmospheric. The 4am climb to Poon Hill was tough but the sunrise was extraordinary. Will definitely come back for the full ABC trek next time.
