For Australians, Nepal is one of the great value adventures — world-class trekking, an easy visa, and mountains that make even the biggest Aussie ranges look modest. It's also a perfect centrepiece for a longer career break or gap trip. The main thing to plan around is the journey via Asia. Here's the complete 2026 trip-planning guide.

Nepal from Australia — quick facts

  • Visa: issued on arrival in Kathmandu (US$30 / $50 / $125) — full rules on our Nepal visa guide for Australians
  • Flights: no direct route — about 16–22 hours via a Southeast/East Asian hub
  • Best time: autumn (Sep–Nov) & spring (Mar–May) — an opposite-season escape from the Aussie heat
  • All-in budget: roughly AUD 4,000–6,000 for a 2–3 week trip

Getting there: flights from Australia

There are no nonstop flights from Australia to Kathmandu (KTM); you connect through one Asian hub. From Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, the best routings go via Singapore (Singapore Airlines/Scoot), Bangkok (Thai), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia Airlines/AirAsia) or Hong Kong / Guangzhou. Expect roughly 16–22 hours door-to-door, with round-trip fares of about AUD 1,400–2,400 depending on season and booking lead time.

Which trek — and a sample itinerary

  • Everest Base Camp (12 days): fly to Lukla → Namche (acclimatize) → Tengboche → Dingboche (acclimatize) → Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp → sunrise at Kala Patthar → descend.
  • Annapurna Base Camp (9 days): from Pokhara into the Sanctuary — gentler, big views, quicker.
  • Short on time? Ghorepani–Poon Hill (4–5 days) for a famous Annapurna sunrise.

When to go & what to know

Autumn (Sep–Nov) is peak season with the clearest skies — book 2–3 months ahead; spring (Mar–May) is warm and colourful. Both conveniently dodge the Australian summer. Build in a recovery day in Kathmandu after the long flight, plus a buffer for the Lukla flight. A licensed guide is required on the main routes (we include one).
