On a Himalayan climb, altitude is the real challenge — not the climbing. Here's how acclimatization works and how to summit a 6,000m peak safely.

Ask anyone who has stood on Island, Mera or Lobuche East what the hardest part was, and few will say the climbing — they'll say the thin air. Above 5,000m your body works with roughly half the oxygen it's used to. Get the acclimatization right and a 6,000m summit is achievable; rush it and it isn't. Here's how it works.

The rules that get you up
- Ascend gradually — slow gains in sleeping altitude above 3,000m
- Climb high, sleep low on acclimatization days
- Hydrate, eat, walk slowly — and never ignore worsening symptoms
- If it gets worse, the only real cure is to descend
How a good itinerary protects you
A well-designed peak climb builds in the acclimatization you need: extra nights and "climb high, sleep low" hikes before the summit push, so your body produces the red blood cells to cope. Watch for the early signs of acute mountain sickness — headache, nausea, poor sleep — and tell your guide; trained guides spot trouble before you do. Many climbers carry acetazolamide (Diamox) as a preventive (discuss with your doctor). Respect the mountain's timetable, not your own, and the summit comes.
