The Bhote Koshi flood took Timure in about seven minutes, here's how four people got out

The people who lived through the Bhote Koshi flood at Timure survived it by running uphill within the first two or three minutes, and almost nobody who waited to work out what the noise was got that chance. A border security camera at Gyirong Port, immediately across the frontier, is stamped 2026-08-26 10:59:53 China time as the debris hits — 08:44 in Nepal, roughly seven minutes after the seismic signal from the collapse at 08:37 NPT. That is the entire warning window for a settlement 14 km downstream.

We have guided the Langtang and Rasuwa side of this valley since 1998, and we have never had to write anything like this. What follows is not our reporting — it is the accounts these four men gave to Nepali and Indian journalists in the days after, set against what the instruments recorded. We have named them because they chose to speak.

The CCTV timestamp is the most useful number anyone has

Seven minutes is the finding that matters most for anyone who walks in these valleys. The seismic network logged the collapse at 08:37 NPT; the camera at the Gyirong customs complex catches the wave at 08:44 NPT. Between those two readings sits about 14 km of river.

That is not a warning window in any practical sense. It is the time it takes to notice a sound, decide it is wrong, and move — which is exactly what separates the men below from the people beside them. Raju Budhathoki thought it was an earthquake

Budhathoki, a customs agent, was resting in his room at Timure when the hillside began to shake at about 8:45. He assumed a quake and ran for the police post — and found the police running too. He went over a wire fence, tearing his hand, and kept going until he reached forest about 500 m above the settlement. From there he watched the Timure market go, house by house.

Prakash Gautam spent the night on dropped noodles

Gautam, also a customs agent at Timure, described a rumble and then darkness — a black cloud over the market within moments. “I ran out of my room without knowing what I was doing,” he said. He spent Wednesday night in the forest, eating instant noodles other people had dropped as they fled, and was lifted out by a Nepal Army helicopter to Bidur at about 10 the next morning.

Downstream in Dolakha, Tulsi Bahadur Bhandari was caught by the edge of the flow rather than its centre. “If the current had not thrown me toward the slope, I would not be alive today,” he said. Ram Kumar Rana, who was later at a hospital with injured relatives, described watching people buried in sand and mud as they ran.

Treat every one of those as provisional. They changed daily through the week, and the missing column contains people who will turn out to be alive and uncontactable as well as people who will not.

The men still under the mountain

The hardest part of this story is not on the surface. Nepal’s independent power producers put 934 people unaccounted for across 11 hydropower projects, and the Nepal Army prioritised 19 tunnels. At Chilime, executive director Baburaj Maharjan said plainly: “We have not been able to carry out a rescue. The tunnel is filled with mud, and it is impossible to enter.”

At Langtang Hydropower, promoter Bijaya Mohan Bhattarai counted 42 still unaccounted for and asked the government to make the tunnels a priority. At Rasuwagadhi, information officer Narayan Nath Neupane estimated three to six people inside a six- or seven-storey underground powerhouse. By Friday about 350 workers had been brought out; more than 100 were still inside.

What this means for trekkers

Was there any warning system on this river?

No effective one for this event. The collapse was not a rainfall flood building over hours — it was a mass of ice and rock detaching and arriving downstream in minutes. A seismic signal existed at 08:37, but nothing connected it to a siren in Timure.

Why are the missing numbers so much larger than the dead?

Because the flow buried settlements and tunnels rather than carrying everyone into the river, and because border trade meant hundreds of drivers and traders were at Rasuwagadhi and Gyirong who were not residents of either place. More than 300 vehicles queued at the crossing were swept away.

Is it safe to trek elsewhere in Nepal this autumn?
