The Cheapest Time to Book International Flights in 2026 (What the Data Actually Says)

Short answer, as of 2026: the day of the week you buy a plane ticket barely moves the price — that old "book on a Tuesday" rule is dead. What actually saves you money is when you book relative to your travel date, and which day you fly. Two of the biggest airfare datasets — Expedia's 2026 Air Hacks Report and Google Flights' analysis of four years of fares — now broadly agree on this, even where their exact numbers differ.

The booking-window sweet spot

Google analysed fares across roughly 4,000 markets between 2021 and 2025. The pattern is consistent: prices tend to bottom out in a window, then climb steeply in the final weeks. For domestic routes that low point sits around 38 days before departure, inside a broader 21-to-52-day band. For long-haul international — the category that matters for a trip to Nepal — the cheapest fares clustered further out, with the data pointing to starting your search roughly three months ahead.

Expedia's 2026 Air Hacks Report frames it differently because it averages what people actually paid at each lead time. By that measure, booking an international economy ticket 15–30 days ahead came in about $190 cheaper on average than locking it in six or more months out, and 31–45 days out saved roughly $185. On domestic routes, booking 15–30 days ahead saved about $130 versus the six-month-plus crowd. The headline both datasets share: booking six months early rarely wins.

The day-of-the-week myth

For years the advice was to shop at a magic hour on a magic weekday. The data has quietly killed it. Once you separate the day you buy from the day you fly, almost all the real savings live on the second one. Fares change by the hour on both datasets; there is no reliable weekly dip in ticket prices.

Expedia's 2026 report did crown Friday as the cheapest single day to both book and depart — a shift it links to lighter end-of-week business travel — while Thursday came out cheapest for international departures, about 8% under the priciest day, Saturday. Treat those as small edges, not rules. The bigger, more durable win is flying Monday to Wednesday and avoiding weekend departures.

The tools, and the honest caveat

Fare-tracking tools can help you time the window rather than the weekday. Google Flights shows a price-history and a "prices are low/typical/high" flag for your dates; most major search engines and price-prediction apps offer similar tracking and alerts. Set an alert as soon as your dates are fixed and let the trend, not a calendar superstition, tell you when to buy. No tool can predict a specific route perfectly — they read history, and history has exceptions.
