How Do You Choose a Trekking Company in Nepal? A Guide's Honest Checklist (2026)
Since April 2023 you legally cannot trek most of Nepal without a licensed guide, which means the company you book with matters more than ever — here's exactly what to check before you pay a deposit.
Check one thing before anything else: is the company you're about to pay a registered member of the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN)? Search their name at taan.org.np. If they don't appear in that directory, they cannot legally issue you a trekking permit, and you should not book with them — no matter how good their Instagram looks.

- Since 1 April 2023, foreign trekkers in Nepal's national parks and conservation areas must be accompanied by a licensed guide from a registered agency — solo permits without a guide are no longer issued in most regions.

Why this got more important, not less
Nepal's 2023 reform was a direct response to a rise in solo-trekker rescue callouts and unlicensed 'guides' who approach tourists directly in Thamel or Pokhara with an unbeatable price. That reform also formalised minimum wages and mandatory insurance for guides and porters — a real worker-protection step, but it also means a legally compliant trekking package now has a wage-and-insurance floor built into the price. If a quote undercuts every other agency by 30-40%, ask why: it's usually an unlicensed freelancer working under a registered company's name, or a porter with no insurance carrying an illegal load.

Do three things before you pay any deposit: (1) look the agency up at taan.org.np and confirm the membership number matches, (2) ask for the guide's TAAN ID and the company's NTB licence number by email — a legitimate operator answers this without hesitation, (3) cross-check reviews on a platform the company can't edit, like TripAdvisor or Google, not just testimonials on their own site. This takes ten minutes and it is the single best protection against both a ruined trip and the fake-rescue and overbilling scams that have made headlines out of Nepal in recent years.

Freelance 'guides' who approach you directly in Kathmandu or Pokhara sometimes claim to work for a real, TAAN-registered company to borrow its credibility — always confirm directly with the company, not with the person offering you the deal.
