Is the Khopra Danda Trek Affected by the 2026 Nepal Floods?

The honest answer up front: no. The Khopra Danda trek is not affected by the 2026 floods, and it is running normally. Khopra Danda — also called Khopra Ridge — is a quiet ridge walk in the southern Annapurna region, reached from Pokhara. The flood that made the news on 26 August 2026 came down the Bhote Koshi in Rasuwa district, on the Tibet border roughly 200 km to the east. It is a different valley, a different river system, and a different watershed. Nothing about it touches the Khopra trail.

I guide in this region, so let me be plain about it rather than sell you a clean story. There are two separate flood events people are mixing up this year, and Khopra is clear of both.

Where Khopra Danda actually is — and why the flood can't reach it

The trek climbs a long grassy ridge on the south-west shoulder of the Annapurna Sanctuary, topping out at Khopra Danda around 3,660 m, with an optional day up to the sacred Khayer Lake near 4,660 m. You start from Pokhara. The whole route drains toward the Kali Gandaki and its tributaries — the Ghar Khola and the streams below Ghorepani — which run down the western side of the range.

The 26 August flood was a sudden surge down the Bhote Koshi, which flows into the Trishuli, in the central-north Rasuwa district. That water system and the Kali Gandaki system never meet on the trekking map. A wall of water in Rasuwa has no physical path to the Khopra ridge. This is why the whole Annapurna region — Pokhara, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Khopra — kept running while the Langtang gateway was cut.

The one thing worth being honest about

There was a separate flood earlier in the season, in July, on the Modi Khola — the river gorge the Annapurna Base Camp trail follows — which damaged a bridge near Ghurjung. That is real, and we have written about it. But Khopra Danda does not use the Modi Khola gorge; it runs on the ridge to the west of it. So even that earlier, closer event does not sit on the Khopra route. If you have read about "an Annapurna flood" and worried, that was the Modi Khola / ABC approach — a different trail from this one.

How we run Khopra safely

Khopra is one of the calmer treks we operate, and the safety picture is straightforward. The trail lives on the ridge, high above the valley rivers, so the flash-flood and swollen-river risk that worries people in monsoon simply isn't the hazard here — you are walking a spine of grassland, not a riverbank. We base logistics out of Pokhara, keep the itinerary flexible so a slow road day never forces a rushed schedule, and stay in the community-run lodges that make this route special (the Khopra ridge community lodge is owned and run by the villages along the trail).

For autumn 2026 we would book Khopra without hesitation. If you want the optional Khayer Lake day, we build in an acclimatisation buffer — 4,660 m is high enough to take seriously even on a short trek. And we will always tell you the plain thing: right now, in late monsoon, the views are hit-and-miss and the leeches are out. Come in October or wait for spring and the ridge earns its reputation.
