Every trekking day in Nepal's Mustang region runs on two clocks: sunrise, and the wind. Scientists who spent weeks in the Kali Gandaki Gorge tracking air currents with weather balloons found a wind system so punctual that pilots schedule flights around it, lodge owners latch their shutters by a certain hour, and trekkers caught out on an open ridge get knocked sideways.

The research, published in the American Meteorological Society's Monthly Weather Review, tracked the Kali Gandaki's daytime upvalley wind using pilot balloons launched across the Mustang Basin over several weeks in 1998. What the team found was not a random gust pattern but a genuine daily engine, driven by simple physics at an extraordinary scale.

By mid-morning, the sun heats the high, exposed floor of the Mustang Basin and the Tibetan Plateau to its north far faster than it heats the deep gorge below. That hot air rises off the plateau, and as it does, it pulls cooler, denser air up from the lower valleys near Pokhara and the Indian plains to take its place. The only route through is the Kali Gandaki Gorge itself — a corridor pinched between two of the tallest mountains on Earth. Force that much air through a gap that narrow, at a slope that steep, and it behaves the way water speeds up through a narrowed pipe: it accelerates hard. By the time it reaches Marpha and Chuksang, researchers measured, it's moving fast enough to make walking difficult and flying dangerous.

It's the same gorge, in fact, that holds the record as one of the deepest gorges on Earth — the Kali Gandaki cuts so far below Dhaulagiri and Annapurna that its rim-to-riverbed drop outranks the Grand Canyon. Depth and wind turn out to be two sides of the same geography: the deeper and narrower the squeeze, the harder the daily air mass has to push through it.

What this means for trekkers

On the Jomsom-Muktinath and Upper Mustang routes, plan the way locals do: walk the exposed valley floor sections before 10-11am, book any Jomsom flight for the early morning, and don't fight the afternoon wind — teahouses in Kagbeni and Jomsom exist for exactly this reason. Pack a proper windproof shell and wraparound sunglasses; loose dust in a 60+ km/h headwind is miserable without them.

None of this makes the Kali Gandaki less spectacular to walk — if anything, it adds a layer most trekkers never expect from a place better known for its ochre cliffs, Tibetan-influenced villages and Buddhist chortens. Locals have built an entire daily rhythm, from flight schedules to when the local dzo caravans move, around a wind system that scientists only formally measured a few decades ago but that Mustang's farmers and traders have clearly known about for centuries.
