Manaslu Circuit or Everest Base Camp? The Honest 2026 Comparison
Nepal just made its restricted treks easier to book solo, and nowhere benefits more than Manaslu. Here's how the permits, crowds, cost and difficulty actually compare against Everest Base Camp, trek by trek, dollar by dollar.
Nepal just made its most restrictive treks easier to book solo, and nowhere benefits more than Manaslu, the trek increasingly named as the quieter answer to Everest Base Camp. The short version: Everest Base Camp is cheaper on permits, needs no restricted-area paperwork, and is more crowded; Manaslu costs more in fees, has always required a guide, and is quieter and wilder. Here's the real comparison.

What Nepal actually changed
Until March 2026, a solo foreigner could not get a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar-Phu or ten other zones, the rule demanded a minimum of two foreign nationals on the same permit, forcing solo travellers to pair up with a stranger or route around the requirement through an agency. On 22 March 2026 the Department of Immigration dropped that minimum after sustained lobbying from the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN), which argued the rule was hindering tourism and discouraging independent travellers. Department spokesperson Tikaram Dhakal said the goal was to strike a balance between trekker safety and promoting tourism while creating local employment. A licensed guide from a registered agency is still legally required, that part hasn't changed, and the department capped the ratio at one guide per seven trekkers.
Everest Base Camp was never touched by this rule, because Sagarmatha National Park isn't a restricted area, it's a national park, governed by a separate (also guide-mandatory, since April 2023) regime with no group-size minimum and no per-week restricted-area fee.

Crowds, honestly
This is where the two treks diverge most. Manaslu's record 12,512 foreign arrivals in FY 2024/25 sounds like a lot until you set it against the Khumbu: Everest Base Camp has drawn heavy annual foreign traffic for well over a decade, and in peak October–November weeks Namche and Gorak Shep teahouses routinely book solid. Manaslu's growth is real, arrivals rose roughly 28% year on year, but it's climbing from a much smaller base, and the restricted-area permit system keeps a natural ceiling on numbers that Everest Base Camp simply doesn't have.
Who each one suits
Choose Everest Base Camp if you want the single most famous trekking goal on Earth, don't mind company on the trail, and would rather not budget three figures in restricted-area fees. Choose Manaslu if solitude and untouched village life matter more than name recognition, you're comfortable with a higher, more technical pass (Larke La, at 5,106m, is a genuine high-altitude crossing, not a viewpoint walk), and you're fine paying more for it. Neither is easier, both are Challenging-grade treks with a mandatory guide, real altitude, and a week or more above 3,500m. Fitness and acclimatisation habits matter more than which one you pick.
