Massive Flash Flood on the Nepal-Tibet Border Leaves Hundreds of Tourists Missing

A wall of water swept down the Bhote Koshi river valley on the Nepal-Tibet border on the morning of August 26, 2026, killing at least nine people and leaving 384 travellers unaccounted for — including three Americans — in one of the most serious trekking-region disasters Nepal has faced in years.

The flood surged out of the mountains above Gyirong county in Tibet and roared down the Bhote Koshi into Nepal's Rasuwa district, tearing through the towns of Syabrubesi and Timure — the road gateway that virtually every trekker heading into the Langtang and Tamang Heritage regions passes through. Witnesses described entire sections of riverside village disappearing in minutes: homes crumbled, parked cars were carried off, and a steel road bridge linking Nepal to the Chinese border crossing was torn from its footings. Rasuwa district has a population of roughly 50,000, and rescue helicopters have struggled to reach the worst-hit stretch because the swollen river is still running well above its normal course.

Nepal's government has not yet confirmed what triggered the flood. It was not rainfall-driven — Rasuwa had no unusual monsoon rain that morning — which points instead to a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF), a supraglacial lake collapse, or a large landslide feeding directly into the Bhote Koshi from the Tibetan side. Chinese authorities in Gyirong county, on the other side of the same border crossing, have separately reported a mudslide and fear major casualties of their own.

The Nepal Tourism Board has stressed that these numbers, drawn from tour company registers and border-crossing logs, are a preliminary list of people not yet accounted for, not a confirmed casualty count — many of those listed may simply be out of phone contact in a region where mobile networks and the only access road have both gone down. The board said local tourism and police authorities are working to verify the whereabouts of every traveller who was in or moving through the affected area. The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu said it was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and devastation, and is working to confirm the status of the three American nationals reported missing.
