Trail & Weather

Nepal vs Peru: Everest Base Camp or the Inca Trail?

Two of the world's greatest treks, two completely different trips. Ancient ruins on a 4-day classic, or the highest mountains on Earth over two weeks. Here's how to choose.

They sit at the top of nearly every trekker's bucket list: Peru's Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, and Nepal's trek to Everest Base Camp. Both are world-class — but they deliver completely different things. One is a short, history-soaked walk to a lost city; the other is a sustained journey to the foot of the highest mountain on Earth. Here's the honest comparison.

The quick contrast

  • Inca Trail: ~4 days, ends at Machu Picchu, tops out at Dead Woman's Pass (4,215m), strict permit quota
  • Everest Base Camp: ~12 days, reaches 5,545m at Kala Patthar, no quota
  • Peru for archaeology + a short classic; Nepal for scale, altitude + culture
  • Nepal offers more days on the trail for the money

Two different kinds of epic

The Inca Trail is a magnificent few days through cloud forest and Inca ruins, climaxing at the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu — but permits are capped and sell out months ahead, and it's over quickly. Everest Base Camp asks more of you: nearly two weeks, higher altitude, real commitment — rewarded with Sherpa villages, glaciers, and the sight of Everest itself. If you want ancient history in a long weekend, Peru wins. If you want the mountains of a lifetime, it's Nepal.

Do the Himalaya version

If Everest is calling, we run Everest Base Camp (and a 14-day version). Want gentler? Annapurna Base Camp. More comparisons: Nepal vs New Zealand.
