No Plastic Bottles Above Namche: the Everest Trek's Green Rule Every Trekker Should Know (2026)
To protect the Khumbu, single-use plastic bottles are restricted above Namche Bazaar on the Everest trail. Here's what international trekkers should pack instead.

Here's a rule that catches many first-time Everest trekkers by surprise: above Namche Bazaar, single-use plastic water bottles are restricted in the Khumbu. The local government, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, has moved against single-use plastics to protect one of the most fragile and famous landscapes on Earth. For international trekkers, it's a small change that makes a big difference — and it's easy to prepare for.

What to know
- Single-use plastic bottles are restricted above Namche Bazaar on the Everest trail
- The rule protects the Khumbu / Sagarmatha region from waste that can't easily be removed
- Carry a reusable bottle + a way to purify water (tablets, filter or UV)
- Refill stations and boiled/filtered water are available along the trail
What to pack instead
The fix is simple and saves you money too. Bring a sturdy reusable bottle (ideally insulated for the cold) and a purification method — chlorine/iodine tablets, a filter bottle, or a UV purifier. Along the trail you can refill from safe-water stations and teahouses rather than buying bottled water (which gets expensive and heavy as you climb anyway). It's the easy, responsible way to trek — and it's increasingly the norm across Nepal's protected areas.
| Bring | Why |
|---|---|
| Reusable insulated bottle | Refill anywhere; keeps water from freezing |
| Purification (tablets/filter/UV) | Safe water without plastic |
| A second light bottle | For long days between villages |
