Annapurna Circuit vs Tour du Mont Blanc: Which Great Loop in 2026?

Nepal's Thorong La at 5,416m against the Alps' hut-to-hut classic. One tests your lungs, the other grinds your legs — here's the honest, numbers-first comparison of two of the world's great trekking loops.

Key facts

  • Annapurna Circuit: 12–18 days on trail, high point the Thorong La at 5,416m — altitude is the real test.
  • Tour du Mont Blanc: 9–11 days, ~170 km, high point only ~2,665m — but roughly 10,000m of total climbing.
  • The TMB needs no permits and no guide; the Annapurna Circuit needs an ACAP permit and, since April 2023, a licensed guide by law.
  • Two of the world's great loops — and two completely different kinds of hard.

Both are circuits. Both sit near the top of every serious walker's list. But stand them side by side and almost everything else pulls apart — the altitude, the permits, the price, even what actually makes each one difficult. The Annapurna Circuit loops around Nepal's Annapurna massif and crosses the Thorong La at 5,416m; the Tour du Mont Blanc rings the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy and Switzerland, topping out around 2,665m. I run Annapurna treks for a living, so I'll be plain about where the Alps genuinely win. Here is the honest, numbers-first comparison.

Two completely different kinds of hard

This is the crux, and it's where most people choose wrong. On the Annapurna Circuit the difficulty is altitude. The walking itself is moderate — long days, but nothing technical — yet you do it on thinning air, and the Thorong La at 5,416m is higher than any point in Europe. That is why the itinerary is two weeks long: the extra days are acclimatisation, not distance. On the Tour du Mont Blanc altitude is a non-issue, but the trail is relentlessly up and down — roughly 10,000m of cumulative ascent over the loop, more than the full height of Everest, packed into 9 to 11 days. One trek tests your lungs; the other grinds your legs. Neither is a stroll, and fitness for one does not guarantee comfort on the other.

Cost, permits and logistics

On paper the TMB wins on simplicity: no permits, no domestic flights, trailheads reachable by train and bus from Geneva, and refuges you can often book yourself. Beds run roughly €55–80 a night for dorm half board on the French and Italian sections and €80–110 in Switzerland, so a self-guided loop lands around €1,000–1,500 all in. But guided TMB, in three of Europe's more expensive countries, commonly starts near US$3,800 — more than a fully-guided Annapurna trek.

Nepal asks a little more paperwork and a lot less money. You need an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners, about US$22), historically a TIMS card (NPR 2,000), and — since 1 April 2023 — a licensed guide is required by law on the Annapurna Circuit; solo trekking is no longer allowed. A good operator folds the permits, the guide, teahouse rooms, meals on the trail and transport into one all-in price, which is why our fully-guided Circuit runs US$980–1,400 depending on group size. Who each suits — the verdict

The honest call

Choose the Tour du Mont Blanc if you want a summer hut-to-hut through the Alps with wine, cheese, no altitude worry and painless logistics — strong legs matter more than time, and you can be walking a day after landing. Choose the Annapurna Circuit if you want genuine high altitude, changing worlds — rice paddies to high desert in one trek — Himalayan teahouse culture, and the crossing of a 5,416m pass, all for less than half the cost of a guided Alpine trip. They aren't rivals; they're two different dreams. Plenty of walkers do the Alps first and come to Nepal for the altitude.
