Best Season
Oct–Nov, Mar–May
6–7 hour scenic drive north through the Trishuli river valley to Syabrubesi, gateway to Langtang National Park.
The Langtang Valley Trek is Nepal's most accessible major Himalayan trek — a 7-day journey to a magnificent glaciated valley just 65 km north of Kathmandu, hemmed by Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) and ringed by peaks that rival the Annapurna and Everest regions in scale. The valley was devastated by the 2015 earthquake and has been rebuilt — trekking here supports the Tamang and Tibetan communities who are still recovering, and the infrastructure is excellent.
The approach climbs from Syabrubesi through dense forest to Lama Hotel, then through bamboo and rhododendron to the open Langtang valley floor and Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m). Optional day hikes from Kyanjin to Tsergo Ri (4,984 m) or Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) deliver the best high-altitude panoramas of the route. The yak-butter cheese produced at the Kyanjin cheese factory is genuinely excellent.
Best seasons: October–November and March–May. Access: Kathmandu–Syabrubesi bus (included). Max altitude: Tsergo Ri 4,984 m (optional) / Kyanjin Ri 4,773 m.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Best season. Clear skies, excellent views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal. October is perfect. Less crowded than Annapurna/Everest.
Spring (Mar–May)
Good. Rhododendron forests in bloom. Gosaikunda still partially frozen in March, fully accessible by May.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Cold but accessible lower Langtang. Kyanjin Gompa reachable with cold-weather gear. Gosaikunda route may be closed.
Monsoon (Jun–Aug)
Wet trails, leeches in forest sections, views obscured. Not recommended.
