How Hard Is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Really?

Everyone asks about Everest. But the trek most first-timers should actually do is Annapurna Base Camp — lower, shorter, forgiving. Here's the honest difficulty, stair by stair.

Everyone asks how hard Everest Base Camp is. But the trek most first-timers should actually do is Annapurna Base Camp — and the honest question is how hard it is, really. The answer: moderate, forgiving, and far gentler on the altitude than Everest. Here is the truth, stair by stair.

The short answer: moderate and forgiving

Annapurna Base Camp tops out at 4,130m — more than 1,200 metres lower than the high point of the Everest trek. That single fact makes it much kinder: the altitude risk is far lower, the days are shorter, and the whole thing fits in a week to ten days rather than two weeks. You walk into a glacial amphitheatre ringed by 7,000m and 8,000m peaks, and you do it without ever needing rope, crampons or climbing skill.

The one genuinely hard bit: the stairs

Do not let “moderate” fool you into thinking it is a stroll. The Annapurna region is built of stone staircases — thousands of them — and the climb in and out of Chhomrong is the stuff of trekker legend: a long, steep flight down to the river and straight back up the other side. Your quads will remember it. Good fitness and trekking poles make it a challenge rather than a trial.

Who it’s perfect for

The honest verdict

If you are reasonably fit and want the best mountain scenery per day in Nepal without the altitude and time commitment of Everest, Annapurna Base Camp is the one. It is the trek we most often recommend for a strong first-timer: hard enough to feel earned, gentle enough to enjoy, and stunning from the first morning. Respect the stairs, keep a steady pace, and you will love it.
