How to Choose a Trekking Company in Nepal in 2026: The Licence Chain That Actually Protects You
A company registration, a Trekking Agency Licence, NTB registration, TAAN membership and a named, licensed guide — verify all five before you pay a deposit, not after you land in Kathmandu.

Ask a Nepal trekking company one question before you pay a deposit: what is your government registration number? Since 1 April 2023, Nepali law has required a licensed guide for almost every foreign trekker in the country's national parks, conservation areas and restricted regions, and that single rule quietly created a five-link paper trail that most travellers never learn to check. Skip it, and you risk more than a disappointing trek — a fine and a forced evacuation, paid out of your own pocket, at a checkpoint, mid-trail.
Key facts
- Since 1 April 2023, foreign trekkers need a licensed guide in every national park, conservation area and TIMS-card restricted region.
- A Nepal trekking agency licence requires roughly NPR 1,000,000 (about $7,500) in paid-up capital and a physical office that gets inspected before approval.
- To even apply for TAAN membership, an agency must already hold a Department of Tourism business licence, a company incorporation certificate and PAN/VAT registration.
- Trekking a restricted or protected area without a licensed guide risks a fine of up to NPR 50,000 and evacuation at your own expense.
The rule exists because, before 2023, a rising number of solo foreign trekkers were running into trouble — altitude sickness, disorientation in bad weather, simple falls — in places with no phone signal and a full day's walk to the nearest clinic. Nepal's response was blunt: no licensed guide, no permit, across most regions. It also handed every trekker a simple filter for a legitimate company. An operator who can walk you through its own licensing without hesitation has almost always done the rest properly too.
The licence chain, link by link
A legitimate trekking company in Nepal isn't proven by one document — it's five, issued by five different authorities, each independently checkable.
| Layer | Issued by | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Company registration | Office of Company Registrar | The business is a real, legally incorporated entity |
| Trekking Agency Licence | Department of Tourism | ~NPR 1,000,000 paid-up capital and an inspected office |
| NTB registration | Nepal Tourism Board | A government tourism-board record, tied to a checkable number |
| TAAN membership | Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal | Industry self-regulation on guide welfare, safety and insurance |
| Licensed guide | Government-approved training + NTB guide licence | The individual walking with you is personally certified — checked at park gates |
That last link is the one enforced in the field. At Monjo, at the ACAP gate in Besisahar, at the Manaslu or Kanchenjunga restricted-area checkpoints, rangers ask for the guide's licence, not the company's brochure. If the guide can't produce one, the trek stops there for everyone in the party, no matter how polished the original booking confirmation looked.
What this means for trekkers
What this means for you
Before you send a deposit, ask two direct questions: what is your TAAN or Nepal Tourism Board registration number, and who — by name — is my guide, and what is their licence number? A real operator answers both in writing, without delay. If a company says the guide will be assigned once you're in Kathmandu, or that price is easier to discuss after you land, treat that as your answer.
TAAN's own membership process is a useful proxy for legitimacy even when a company isn't a member itself: to apply, an agency must already hold the Department of Tourism business licence, the company incorporation certificate, and PAN/VAT registration — the first three links in the chain above, bundled into one paperwork check. TAAN's members directory lets you search a company by name before you ever book.
Five real questions, asked in writing
- What is your Department of Tourism trekking agency licence number, and your NTB registration number?
- Are you a TAAN member — and can I check the number on the members directory myself?
- Who is my guide, by name, and what is their government licence number?
- What is your physical office address in Kathmandu or Pokhara, and can I visit it?
- What exactly is included and excluded in the quoted price, in writing, before I pay?
One nuance worth knowing: the mandatory-guide rule is enforced unevenly by region. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, which administers permits around Everest Base Camp, has not adopted the national guide mandate locally, so that route remains an exception where independent trekking is still legally possible. Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Kanchenjunga, Dolpo and the Annapurna Conservation Area have no such exception — a licensed guide is required by law, and a March 2026 update now lets a solo trekker obtain a Restricted Area Permit in their own name, rather than needing a group of two, provided they still book through a TAAN-registered agency with a licensed guide.
None of this paperwork is exotic — it exists specifically so a first-time visitor can tell a real operator from a website with good photography. We're TAAN-registered and NTB-licensed ourselves, and we'd rather you verify that on us too, on Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp or the Manaslu Circuit, than take our word for it.
