The World's Trending Travel Destinations for 2026 — and the One Adventure Everyone's Overlooking

Every winter the travel industry tells us where the world is going next — and this year the data is loud, specific, and remarkably repetitive. Flight platforms, review giants and booking engines have all published their 2026 rankings, and the same handful of cities keep surfacing. Below is what the numbers actually say, verified against the companies that published them. Then, as a mountain editor sitting in Pokhara, I want to make a quiet case for the one 2026 trip almost nobody is putting on these lists.

Where the world says it's going in 2026

Start with raw booking behaviour. Flight-and-hotel platform eDreams ODIGEO analysed reservations for travel dates across all of 2026 and crowned Bangkok the most-booked city in the world, ahead of Paris and Rio de Janeiro. It is a European-heavy list after that, with a Brazilian surprise in eighth.

Bangkok's dominance is not a one-off. Euromonitor International ranks it the most-visited city in the world for a second year running, projecting more than 30 million international arrivals — comfortably ahead of Hong Kong, London, Dubai and Paris.

Then there is the reputation vote. Tripadvisor's 2026 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best Destinations, drawn from millions of reviews, named Bali the best place in the world, ending London's reign, and honoured 270 destinations across 60 countries. Meanwhile Trip.com Group reports Japan, China, Thailand and Türkiye soaring in demand, with Japan a fixture in the global top three and Vietnam leading Southeast Asia — its mountain town of Sapa named the fastest-growing destination in Asia.

Notice the pattern. Almost every one of these winners is a city or a beach — places you fly into, photograph, and share a sidewalk with a few million other people. If your idea of 2026 is a great restaurant and a famous skyline, the crowd has excellent taste. But if you want something the algorithm keeps missing, read on. The trip everyone's overlooking

Here is what does not appear on a single most-booked list: a footpath. Not one of these rankings measures adventure — the kind of trip you return from changed rather than merely rested. That is exactly where the Nepal Himalaya sits, and why I think it is the most undervalued journey of 2026.

Consider what you actually get. You walk for a week or two through villages that have no road, sleep in family-run teahouses, and wake to eight-thousand-metre peaks turning gold. There is no queue for the sunrise. On the classic 14-day Everest Base Camp trek you stand at the foot of the highest mountain on the planet having earned every step — something no direct flight sells.

Those are solo-traveller starting prices; join a group and they fall further — Everest Base Camp drops to $1,350 per person at eight or more, Annapurna Base Camp to $600, Mardi Himal to $580. For a first-timer who wants big mountains without a technical climb, the Annapurna Base Camp trek or the quieter, shorter Mardi Himal ridge are the softest landings into the Himalaya you can buy.

How to actually plan it for 2026

If the rankings have you dreaming of somewhere with meaning rather than a boarding-gate stampede, the planning is simpler than most people fear. October and November are the prime autumn window; March to May brings the rhododendron bloom. You need a licensed guide and the right permits, both of which we handle.
