Gokyo Lakes: the quieter, bluer alternative to Everest Base Camp

Everyone knows Everest Base Camp. Far fewer know that just one valley to the west lies a trek many seasoned trekkers consider better: Gokyo. A string of impossibly turquoise glacial lakes, the longest glacier in Nepal, and from the top of Gokyo Ri a panorama of four of the world's six highest mountains — with a fraction of the foot traffic. This is the Khumbu for those in the know.

Why Gokyo over Everest Base Camp
The honest secret of the Khumbu is that the best view of Everest is not from Base Camp — it is from the summit of Gokyo Ri, where the whole giant stands clear above the Ngozumpa Glacier rather than hidden behind closer ridges. The Gokyo valley is also markedly quieter than the main Base Camp trail, the lakes add a colour you simply do not get on the EBC route, and the trek can be done as its own loop or linked to Base Camp via the high Cho La pass for the best of both.

The lakes themselves
The Gokyo lakes are the highest freshwater lake system on earth, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and an electric shade of blue-green against the grey moraine. Walking among them, with the Ngozumpa Glacier grinding alongside and the great peaks ahead, is a different kind of Himalayan experience from the march to Base Camp — slower, stranger and, for many, more beautiful.
What this means for you
If you want the Everest region but crave fewer crowds and a bigger payoff view, choose Gokyo. It demands the same fitness and acclimatisation discipline as Base Camp, so go with proper pacing and a guide — and if you have the days, link Gokyo and Base Camp over the Cho La for the ultimate Khumbu trek.
