How to Renew Your Passport Fast in 2026 (US, UK & Processing Times)

Short version: renew your passport the moment it drops under a year of validity, not the week before you fly. As of 2026, a standard UK renewal takes around three weeks, US renewals run several weeks by mail, and most countries — Nepal included — will not let you in unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. United Kingdom: three services, three speeds

If you are short on time, the 1-week Fast Track costs £192 for adults (£156.50 for children) and needs an in-person appointment, usually available the day after you apply. For a genuine emergency, the Online Premium service costs £239.50 and has your new passport ready to collect about four hours after your appointment — but it is for adult renewals only, not first passports or applications from abroad. Children's passports are cheaper throughout: £66.50 online for a standard book.

United States: renewals by mail, plus expedited

The US Department of State charges $130 to renew an adult passport book (form DS-82, by mail) and $165 for a first adult book (form DS-11, applied for in person, which includes the $35 execution fee). A child's book is $135.

Expedited service is available for an additional fee and shaves weeks off the wait, and you can pay extra for faster return delivery. Because the State Department's posted routine and expedited times shift with seasonal demand, the only reliable figure is the one on travel.state.gov on the day you apply — check it there, and remember mailing time is on top of the processing estimate.

How to renew fast if you have left it late

• UK: book the 1-week Fast Track or same-day Premium appointment directly on gov.uk — skip third-party "fast passport" resellers, which just add a markup to submit the same government form.
• US: choose expedited service, and if you are travelling within about two weeks, look into an in-person appointment at a passport agency (via the National Passport Information Center) rather than mailing your application.
• Both: apply online where possible, pay for tracked return delivery, and get your photo right the first time — a rejected photo is the single most common cause of delay.

Common mistakes that cost you weeks

• Forgetting the six-month rule and being denied boarding despite an in-date passport.
• Booking flights first, renewing second — always renew before you commit to non-refundable travel.
