Last updated: 29 August 2026. I plan the flights, restricted-area permits and camping logistics for our Dolpo trips, so let me keep this page honest and current. If you have Dolpo or Shey Phoksundo booked, here is the short answer first, then the detail.

Is the Dolpo & Phoksundo trek affected by the 2026 Nepal floods? No — Dolpo sits in Nepal's remote far-western Karnali region, in the rain-shadow behind the high Himalaya, hundreds of kilometres from the flood zone, and it is completely unaffected. The flash flood of 26 August 2026 came down the Bhote Koshi into Rasuwa district in the north-central Himalaya. Shey Phoksundo Lake and the Dolpo trails are at the far western end of the country, in the Karnali basin, in a high desert the monsoon barely reaches. There is no watershed, road or trail connecting the two. If you want somewhere genuinely far from this year's trouble, the trans-Himalayan west is about as far as Nepal goes — and the things you actually plan for here are the flight, the permits and the guide, not the flood.

Dolpo & Phoksundo — the honest status

Affected by the 26 August flood? No. That flood was on the Bhote Koshi in Rasuwa. Dolpo is in Dolpa district, in far-western Karnali province — hundreds of kilometres to the west, in a separate basin.
A rain-shadow world. Dolpo lies behind the Dhaulagiri massif in the trans-Himalayan rain-shadow. The monsoon that drove this year's floods barely reaches it, which is why the region even trekks through late summer.
Shey Phoksundo Lake is untouched. Nepal's deepest lake (around 145 m) sits in Shey Phoksundo National Park, nowhere near the flood zone.
The real planning points are logistics. A weather-dependent flight into Juphal (2,475 m), restricted-area permits, and a licensed guide with at least two trekkers in the party — that is what shapes a Dolpo trip, not flood damage.
Best season is here. Juphal flights firm up from October into November; Upper Dolpo, in the deep rain-shadow, runs from late spring right through autumn.

Where Dolpo is, and why the flood cannot reach it

Nepal's trekking regions are split by great ranges and drained by separate rivers that stay apart until the plains. The 26 August flood surged down the Bhote Koshi, which flows out of Tibet into Rasuwa and on into the Trishuli, hitting Timure and Syabrubesi hardest according to reporting collated by Wikipedia's running summary and outlets including CNN. It is a north-central event.

Dolpo is in the far west, in Dolpa district of Karnali province — the largest and one of the remotest districts in Nepal. Shey Phoksundo Lake drains through the Suli Gad into the Thuli Bheri and on into the Karnali, the great river of the western Himalaya. That basin never meets the Bhote Koshi or the Trishuli in the mountains. Just as important, Dolpo sits in the rain-shadow behind Dhaulagiri: the summer monsoon spends its rain on the southern slopes and arrives here as little more than high cloud. This is the country's high desert — barren, Tibetan in feel, and one of the driest inhabited places in Nepal. The very weather system that caused the floods in the south is the one Dolpo is sheltered from.

The permits are the real gate here, not the flood. The standard Phoksundo and Lower Dolpo routes need a restricted-area permit, a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit and a licensed guide; Upper Dolpo beyond the lake needs the Upper Dolpo restricted-area permit — widely published at around US$500 per person for the first ten days — with a minimum of two trekkers in the party. All of it is arranged in Kathmandu, nowhere near Rasuwa. We confirm the exact current fees with you before you pay.

How we run Dolpo this autumn

Dolpo is camping, not teahouses, so the logistics matter more than on a busy trail. We build buffer days around the Juphal flight at both ends, because it is the single most weather-sensitive link in the trip. We carry a full camping and safety setup, plan conservative acclimatisation for the high passes, and insist on proper travel and rescue insurance for a region where evacuation is genuinely remote. None of that changes because of the floods — it is simply how a serious far-western trek is run well.

A local guide's take

Let me be precise rather than just reassuring. The 26 August flood was a Bhote Koshi event in Rasuwa. Dolpo is in Dolpa, in the far-western Karnali, in the rain-shadow behind Dhaulagiri — the driest, remotest trekking country in Nepal. The flood and the Phoksundo trail are in different basins, on different sides of the Himalaya, hundreds of kilometres apart. What I actually plan around for Dolpo is the Juphal flight and the restricted-area permits, and that is true every season. If you were looking for a reason to finally do the far west, a quiet autumn away from the crowds and the trouble is as good a one as any.
