Which Nepal Trek Should a Beginner Actually Do in 2026? Poon Hill vs Mardi Himal vs Langtang, Compared
If you've never trekked above 3,000 metres before, the honest starting point is Poon Hill or Panchase, not Everest Base Camp — here's the real difference in altitude, days and cost.

The question we hear most from first-time trekkers isn't "is Everest Base Camp hard" — it's "which trek should I even start with." The honest answer depends on three numbers most sites bury: maximum altitude, daily elevation gain, and how many days you actually have. Below is the real comparison, not the sales pitch.
Key facts
- Poon Hill tops out at 3,210m over 4–6 days with a gradual 400–700m daily gain — the standard first-timer route
- Mardi Himal's upper viewpoint sits at ~4,200m (base camp ~4,500m) over 4–7 days — a genuine step up in altitude exposure
- Langtang Valley's Kyanjin Ri viewpoint reaches 4,773m over 7–8 days, roughly the same altitude ceiling as Everest Base Camp
- Panchase peaks at just 2,500m over 3–4 days — the easiest of the four, popular with families
Altitude is the variable that actually matters
Every one of these treks is graded "easy to moderate" in marketing copy, which is close to useless — what changes the experience is how high you go and how fast. Above roughly 3,000m, altitude sickness risk starts climbing regardless of fitness level, and the standard guidance is no more than 300–500m of net sleeping-altitude gain per day once past that point. Poon Hill and Panchase never cross into serious altitude territory: Poon Hill's 3,210m summit is a single high point reached and descended in a day, and Panchase never exceeds 2,500m at all. Mardi Himal and Langtang are a different proposition — both push past 4,200m, close to where mild altitude symptoms (headache, poor sleep, breathlessness) become common even in fit, careful trekkers, which is why both need a proper acclimatisation day built in, not just a longer itinerary.
| Trek | Days | Max altitude | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panchase | 3–4 | 2,500m | Families, very limited time, zero altitude risk |
| Poon Hill | 4–6 | 3,210m | True first-timers wanting a real Himalayan sunrise |
| Mardi Himal | 4–7 | ~4,200–4,500m | Fit beginners ready for one real altitude test |
| Langtang Valley | 7–8 | 4,773m | A dress rehearsal for Everest/Annapurna Base Camp |
The other cost nobody puts in the itinerary
All four routes require the same base paperwork: a TIMS card and, for the Annapurna-region treks (Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Panchase), a single Annapurna Conservation Area Permit that currently runs NPR 3,000 (roughly $23–25) and covers every trail inside the conservation area, however long the trek. Langtang requires its own Langtang National Park entry permit, also NPR 3,000, on top of the TIMS card. Since April 2023, a licensed guide is legally required for foreign trekkers on all of these routes — budget $25–35 a day for the guide's wage on standard terrain, plus their food, lodging and a tip on top, an all-in cost most first-timers underestimate by half.
What this means for trekkers
What this means for you
If you've never slept above 3,000m and have four to six days, start with Poon Hill — it delivers a genuine Himalayan panorama without meaningful altitude risk. If you're already reasonably fit and want to test how your body handles 4,000m+ before committing to a full base camp trek, Mardi Himal is the honest middle step. Langtang Valley is really a base-camp-grade trek in beginner's clothing — treat it as training for Everest or Annapurna Base Camp, not as an easy first outing. And if what you actually want is a short walk with your family and zero altitude worry, Panchase, not Poon Hill, is the right call.
