Nepal's PM Balen Shah has become the country's biggest travel champion — and trekkers win
The world's youngest head of government is an engineer, a rapper, and now Nepal's most powerful tourism marketer — showcasing the country's trails and peaks to millions online. Here's why that's great news if you want to trek Nepal.

Most countries market themselves through tourism boards and glossy ads. Nepal now has something far more powerful: a prime minister who does it himself, on his own phone, to millions of followers. Since taking office in March 2026, Balendra "Balen" Shah — the world's youngest serving head of government — has been turning his huge online platform toward Nepal's mountains, trails and lakes. For anyone dreaming of trekking here, the timing has never been better.
Who is Balen Shah?
- Nepal's 40th Prime Minister, sworn in on 27 March 2026
- At 36, reported as the world's youngest serving head of government
- An engineer and rapper turned politician — and former Mayor of Kathmandu (2022–2026)
- Famous for a digital-first style with a massive social-media following
A leader who markets the mountains
Balen rose to power on the back of a youth movement and a reputation for getting things done, first as the independent mayor who cleaned up Kathmandu, now as PM. What makes him unusual on the world stage is how he communicates — directly, constantly, and visually. When the most-followed figure in the country points his camera at the Himalaya, the whole world looks. That spotlight lands squarely on the trails our travellers come to walk: Everest, Annapurna, and the trekking valleys beyond.
