Nepal vs the Dolomites: Hut-to-Hut in Italy or Teahouse Trekking in Nepal in 2026?
The Alta Via routes are the world's most comfortable hut-to-hut trek. Nepal invented the idea at twice the altitude, half the price. An honest comparison for 2026.

If you love the idea of walking all day and sleeping in a mountain hut each night — no tent, no heavy pack, a hot meal waiting — you have two of the world''s great options. Italy''s Dolomites offer the polished, wine-and-linen version on the Alta Via routes. Nepal offers the original teahouse trek at twice the altitude for a fraction of the cost. Here is the honest comparison for 2026.
The quick contrast
- Alta Via 1: ~120 km, 7–11 days, tops out at Lagazuoi, 2,752 m
- Alta Via 2: ~180 km, 10–16 days, higher and harder, with via ferrata
- Nepal teahouse trek: the same hut-to-hut idea, but up to 5,545 m
- Dolomites for comfort and easy logistics; Nepal for altitude, scale and value
Two versions of the same beautiful idea
The Dolomites'' Alta Via 1 is the most famous hut-to-hut trail in Europe: roughly 120 km over 7 to 11 days, threading between limestone towers and staying each night in a rifugio, a staffed mountain hut that serves half-board dinners, espresso and, often, a very good glass of wine. Its highest point is Lagazuoi at 2,752 m. Its tougher sibling, the Alta Via 2, runs about 180 km over 10 to 16 days, climbs to Forcella Marmolada around 2,885 m, and adds cabled via-ferrata sections that demand more experience. Both are superbly waymarked, and you can walk them self-guided.
Nepal invented this format decades ago and calls it teahouse trekking. Instead of rifugi you sleep in family-run lodges in Sherpa and Gurung villages; instead of espresso at 2,700 m you get dal bhat at 4,000 m. The comforts are simpler, but the concept is identical — walk light, sleep warm, eat well — and the ceiling is far higher.
The altitude gap is enormous
This is where the two part ways. The highest you stand on the Alta Via 1 is 2,752 m; on the Alta Via 2, under 2,900 m. On a standard Nepal teahouse trek to Everest Base Camp you reach 5,545 m at Kala Patthar — roughly double the Dolomites'' high point. That does not make Nepal "better," but it makes it a genuinely different physical experience: the Dolomites are about spectacular rock scenery at moderate, oxygen-rich elevations, while Nepal is about the thin-air, big-mountain arena you simply cannot find in the Alps. If altitude worries you, the Dolomites are the gentler introduction; if altitude is the whole appeal, only Nepal delivers it.
| Feature | Dolomites (Alta Via 1) | Nepal (teahouse trek) |
|---|---|---|
| Length | ~120 km, 7–11 days | 7–14 days (region-dependent) |
| Highest point | 2,752 m (Lagazuoi) | up to 5,545 m (Kala Patthar) |
| Overnights | Rifugi (half-board huts) | Family teahouse lodges |
| Guide needed? | No — self-guided, waymarked | Guided (permits & safety) |
| Season | Late June–late September | Spring & autumn |
Comfort, season and cost
The Dolomites win on comfort and convenience: excellent food, hot showers at many huts, and a short, reliable summer season from late June to late September. They also win on ease of access from Europe. But they lose on price — European mountain huts, meals and Alpine logistics add up quickly, and popular rifugi book out months ahead. Nepal is dramatically better value. Our guided Annapurna Base Camp trek starts at $920 per person for a private, solo booking and drops to about $680 per person in a group of eight — land-only, with your guide, permits, lodge nights and meals included for nine days. The shorter Mardi Himal trek starts at $780 solo. For a longer trip with real altitude, Everest Base Camp runs 12 days.
So which should you do?
Do the Dolomites if you want a comfortable, self-guided walk through some of the most photogenic rock scenery on earth, with good wine at the end of each stage and no altitude drama. Do Nepal if you want the same hut-to-hut rhythm carried into the highest mountains in the world, with more days on the trail per dollar and a culture you will still be thinking about years later. Plenty of our guests treat the Alta Via as the warm-up — then come to Nepal for the main event.
Take the hut-to-hut habit higher
Loved the rifugi rhythm? Nepal''s teahouse trails go far higher for far less: start with Annapurna Base Camp or Mardi Himal, then aim for Everest Base Camp. More comparisons: Nepal vs New Zealand.
