Private Trek or Join a Group in Nepal? The Real Cost Difference in 2026

Book a private trek in Nepal instead of joining a scheduled group departure and you should expect to pay roughly 25 to 30 percent more per person. On a 14-day Everest Base Camp trek that is about $500 — a real difference, but not the thousands many first-time trekkers assume. Almost all of it comes from one thing: a small set of fixed costs, a guide, permit paperwork and a Lukla flight seat, being split across more heads.

Here is why the curve looks the way it does. A guide's daily wage, the Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu permits, and a Kathmandu–Lukla flight seat cost roughly the same whether the operator is walking one client or eight. Split those fixed costs across a bigger group and the per-person share shrinks — but it never disappears, because every trekker still needs their own permit, their own porter capacity and their own bed. That is why the price falls steeply between one and four people, then flattens: most of the saving is already banked by the time a group reaches four.

What this means for trekkers

If you go private, you are not being overcharged. You are paying for a guide and porter team dedicated to you alone, an itinerary you control day to day, and a start date that depends on nobody else's calendar. That is worth the premium if you are on a tight work schedule, trekking with children or an older parent who needs a slower pace without holding up strangers, booking at short notice when the next scheduled departure is a month away, or simply want the trail to yourselves.

If you join a group, you trade some flexibility for a materially lower bill — and, for many first-timers, something the price tag does not capture: instant company on a two-week trail. Solo travellers in particular tend to do better on a scheduled departure, because they get the group rate instead of carrying every fixed cost alone. That is the difference between $1,350 and $1,850 on the same Everest itinerary.
