Why Langtang
The Nearest Himalayan Valley to Kathmandu
The Langtang valley sits just 32km north of Kathmandu — closer to the capital than any other major trekking region. From the city, you drive 4 hours to Syabrubesi (1,460m) and within two days you are walking through ancient forests into one of the most dramatic valleys in the Himalaya, directly below Langtang Lirung (7,227m).
The valley is Tamang country. The Tamang people have lived here for centuries — their culture, architecture, and Buddhism distinct from both Sherpa and Gurung traditions. The rebuilt village of Langtang — destroyed by the 2015 earthquake landslide that killed over 300 people — now stands as both a memorial and a testament to community resilience. Staying here directly supports that rebuilding.
Gosaikunda at 4,380m is one of Nepal's most sacred lakes — a pilgrimage destination for hundreds of thousands of Hindus during the Janai Purnima festival each August. The lake itself is one of 108 in the Gosaikunda group, and the trek here through rhododendron forests and high moorland is spectacular in March and April.
