When Exactly to Start Your Autumn 2026 Nepal Trek: A Week-by-Week Guide
Dashain and Tihar reshape flights, buses, guide availability and trail crowds for six straight weeks. Here's the actual week you should fly in, mapped against the real 2026 festival dates.

Ask 'when should I start my autumn Nepal trek?' and most advice just says 'October.' That isn't specific enough for 2026, because Nepal's two biggest festivals — Dashain (Oct 11-25) and Tihar (Nov 7-11) — fall squarely inside the autumn trekking window and change flights, buses, guide availability and trail crowds week by week. Here is an honest, week-by-week read on when to actually start.
Key facts — Nepal festival dates, 2026
- Dashain: Ghatasthapana Oct 11 → Vijaya Dashami (main Tika day) Oct 21 → Kojagrat Purnima (close) Oct 25.
- Tihar: Kaag Tihar Nov 7 → Bhai Tika (final day) Nov 11.
- Both festivals sit inside Nepal's clearest-sky, most reliable-flight window (Oct-Nov) — the logistics issue is entirely about people traveling home, not weather.
- Domestic flights and long-distance buses are typically booked out weeks in advance around the main Tika days as Nepalis travel to their home villages.
Why the dates matter more than the month
October and November are Nepal's best trekking weather, full stop — post-monsoon skies, stable Lukla flights, dry trails. That is exactly why airlines, buses and teahouse staff are stretched two ways at once: trekking season and the country's biggest homecoming. Around Vijaya Dashami (Oct 21) especially, many Nepalis — including guides, porters and lodge staff — travel to be with family, similar to a Christmas staffing crunch elsewhere. It doesn't shut the trails down, but it is the one week of the season where you should expect thinner staffing and tighter transport, not the clear, quiet trekking you pictured.
| Week starting | What's happening | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 28 | Monsoon tail-end, skies still clearing | Caution — weather inconsistent |
| Oct 5 | Dry weather arriving, Dashain travel not yet peaked | Good |
| Oct 12 | Dashain underway (Ghatasthapana Oct 11); flights/buses filling | Caution — book early |
| Oct 19 | Vijaya Dashami Oct 21 — guides and staff traveling home | Avoid starting this week if avoidable |
| Oct 26 | Post-Tika, clearest skies, staffing back to normal | Best window of the season |
| Nov 2 | Peak clear-sky trekking, trails at their busiest | Good, but crowded — book teahouses ahead |
| Nov 9 | Tihar underway (Nov 7-11); shorter travel crunch | Caution — book early |
| Nov 16 | Post-Tihar, still clear, trails thinning out | Best value window |
| Nov 23 | Cold deepening; early snow risk on high passes | Caution for high-altitude routes |
| Nov 30 | Winter approaching; some high teahouses closing | Avoid EBC and high Annapurna; fine for lower treks |
The two best windows, and why they work
The strongest single week to start a 2026 autumn trek is the week of October 26 — Dashain is fully over, staff and transport are back to normal, and you still get October's legendary clarity without the pre-Tika rush. The second-best window is mid-to-late November, after Tihar wraps on the 11th: skies are still clear, trails are visibly thinner than the October peak, and — per the Annapurna Conservation Area's own 2025 arrival data — this is genuinely a quieter month than the April and October crowd peaks. The trade-off by late November is cold: expect teahouse nights well below freezing above 4,000m, and build in buffer days in case an early-season snowfall closes a high pass like Thorong La for a day.
What this means for trekkers
Don't book a start date inside Oct 17-23 unless you have no choice — that is the week transport and staffing are tightest around Vijaya Dashami. If your dates are flexible, aim for Oct 26-Nov 5 for the best mix of clear weather and normal logistics, or push to mid-November for a quieter trail at the cost of colder nights. Either way, lock in flights and your trekking permit slot 6-8 weeks ahead if any part of your trip overlaps Oct 11-25 or Nov 7-11 — that is when domestic seats disappear fastest.
What this looks like for specific treks
- Everest Base Camp (12-14 days): Start Oct 26-Nov 5 to land at Base Camp with October's clarity intact and normal Lukla flight staffing.
- Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill (short treks): Mid-November works well — lower altitude means the cold trade-off is smaller, and trails are noticeably quieter than October.
- Anything crossing a high pass (Thorong La, Larkya La): Don't start after mid-November — build in a weather buffer day, since early snow becomes a real risk from late November.
