Key facts

  • October–November is the best trekking window — clearest skies, stable weather.
  • March–May is a close second — warmer, with rhododendrons in bloom.
  • June–August is monsoon on the classic trails — but perfect for rain-shadow Mustang and Dolpo.
  • The month most people get wrong: booking a high pass in deep winter, or the classics in the monsoon.

There is no bad time to be in Nepal — but there is absolutely a wrong time to trek the wrong region. Choose the month well and you get flawless skies and empty-ish trails; choose badly and you get cloud, leeches or a snowed-in pass. Here is every month of 2026, honestly ranked, and how to pick the right trek for whenever you can travel.

The month most people get wrong

Two mistakes, over and over. The first: booking a high-pass trek in December or January — the Thorong La or the Everest passes can be blocked by snow, and it is bitterly cold up high. The second, bigger one: attempting the classic trails in the monsoon (June–August), then spending two weeks in cloud, mud and leeches. Neither is necessary — there is a right trek for every month.

What to trek, whenever you can travel

Match the month to the trek

Coming in autumn (Oct–Nov) or spring (Mar–May)? Anything is open — Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, all at their best. Stuck with summer (Jun–Aug)? Go to Upper Mustang or Dolpo, which sit in the Himalayan rain shadow and stay dry. Only free in winter (Dec–Feb)? Choose lower treks — Poon Hill, Mardi, Langtang — and skip the high passes. There is always a good option.

Ready to match your dates to a trek? Autumn and spring suit the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp classics; summer is made for Upper Mustang; winter for the Poon Hill trek. Tell us your window and we will match it. For the full picture, see our which-trek decision guide.
