Everest Region Treks Compared: Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes & the Three Passes
Everest Base Camp is just the start. The Khumbu has several world-class treks — turquoise lakes, high passes and quiet alternatives. Here's how to choose the right Everest trek.

Most people say "Everest Base Camp" without realising the Khumbu offers several distinct world-class treks. From the classic Base Camp route to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and the ultimate high-pass circuit, here's how the main Everest-region treks compare — so you pick the right one.

The Everest-region options
- Everest Base Camp: the classic — Kala Patthar, the glacier, the icon
- Gokyo Lakes: turquoise high-altitude lakes, quieter, with Gokyo Ri's huge view
- EBC + Cho La / Gokyo: combine Base Camp with the lakes over a high pass
- Three Passes: the ultimate Khumbu circuit for strong, experienced trekkers
How to choose
If you want the icon, do the classic Base Camp trek. Prefer fewer crowds and jaw-dropping lakes? Gokyo. Want the best of both? The EBC–Cho La–Gokyo combination links them over a glaciated pass. And if you're fit, experienced and hungry for the full Khumbu, the Three Passes circuit is the region's crown. All sleep in teahouses; difficulty and length rise as you go down this list.
| Trek | Best for |
|---|---|
| Everest Base Camp | The classic icon |
| Gokyo Lakes | Lakes & fewer crowds |
| EBC + Cho La + Gokyo | Both, over a high pass |
| Three Passes | The ultimate, for the experienced |
