Far-Western Nepal Travel Guide: How to Reach Api, Darchula & the Wild West (2026)
Nepal's far west is its least-visited, most untouched region — and the PM is putting it on the map. Here's how to get there and what to see, from Api Himal to Khaptad.

If mainstream Nepal is Everest and Annapurna, the far west is the part even most Nepalis never visit. It is the country's wildest, least-developed and least-trekked corner — and after the PM spotlighted Api Himal, it is finally getting attention. Here is how to actually travel there in 2026.
Far-western Nepal — the basics
- Province: Sudurpashchim (far-western Nepal)
- Air gateway: Dhangadhi, then a long drive into the hills
- Star peak: Api Himal, 7,132m, in Darchula district
- Also here: Khaptad National Park, remote Hindu pilgrimage sites
- Crowds: among the lowest of anywhere in Nepal
Getting there
The far west is remote by design. Most travellers fly from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi in the lowlands, then drive north for many hours into the hill districts — Darchula for Api, or toward Khaptad's plateau. There is no quick way in, which is exactly why the region stays so pristine. Roads are rough and infrastructure is basic, so this is country for organised, guided travel rather than independent improvisation.
| Place | Why go |
|---|---|
| Api Himal & Base Camp | 7,132m giant, alpine meadows, near-zero trekkers |
| Khaptad National Park | Rolling grassland plateau, pilgrimage, wildlife |
| Darchula district | Traditional far-western culture, big mountains |
