Makalu Barun National Park: the Wild Heart of the Himalaya

The Makalu trek isn't just a route to a mountain — it runs through one of the most extraordinary protected areas on the planet. Makalu Barun National Park, in eastern Nepal, packs an astonishing range of life into one wild corner, from steamy lowland forest to the summit of the world's fifth-highest peak. It's a big part of what makes this trek so special.

Makalu Barun National Park

  • Spans from around 400m to 8,485m — one of the greatest elevation ranges of any park
  • Home to the elusive snow leopard and red panda
  • Includes the Barun Valley, a designated strict nature reserve
  • Hundreds of bird species and rich rhododendron forest

A vertical mile of life

Because the park climbs from subtropical jungle to permanent ice, it shelters an incredible spread of ecosystems and wildlife in a single trek. Lower down there are langurs, butterflies and dense forest; higher up, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and — for the very lucky — signs of snow leopard. The Barun Valley's strict-reserve status keeps it pristine. Walking through it, you're not just trekking to a base camp; you're crossing one of Asia's last great wild places.
