If you're planning a 2026 or 2027 trek and wondering whether luxury Nepal is now a real, bookable thing rather than a marketing phrase, here is the direct answer: yes, on the trail it already is, and the Ritz-Carlton news is really the market catching up to what a small number of operators, including us, have offered on routes like Everest Base Camp for years.

That confidence sits against a real number: Americans were Nepal's second-largest source market in 2025 at 112,316 arrivals, behind only India — exactly the long-haul, higher-spending segment a Ritz-Carlton needs to fill $1,000 rooms.
Where luxury actually shows up for trekkers
A five-star lobby in Kathmandu is one thing. What changes your actual trek is the string of lodges you sleep in between Lukla and Base Camp, and that market has quietly matured over the past decade. On the Everest route, private-ensuite luxury lodges (duvets, real coffee, sometimes a sauna) have existed for years, and they're the backbone of our own Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek, run alongside the classic teahouse version of the same route.

If you want a soft landing before and after a hard trek — a real bed, a hot shower, decent coffee — a luxury lodge trek, or a few nights at a five-star Kathmandu hotel bookending a classic teahouse trek, gets you most of the benefit for a fraction of doing both end to end.
Who should book which
Book the luxury lodge trek if it's a honeymoon or milestone trip, you're over 55 and want a real bed to recover in each night, or comfort simply matters more to you than the extra cost. Book the classic teahouse trek, still our most-booked Everest itinerary, if budget matters, you want the shared-lodge social atmosphere that defines trekking-lodge culture, or you're heading somewhere like the Manaslu Circuit, where luxury lodges don't exist yet at all. Either way, book the trek before the hotel: the Ritz-Carlton won't open until 2029, but Everest's autumn 2026 season starts in a few months.
