Pokhara: Asia's Paragliding Capital
With over 50,000 tandem flights per year, Pokhara is one of the world's top paragliding destinations. The combination of Phewa Lake below, the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif at eye level, and reliable thermal conditions makes it uniquely spectacular. For most visitors, a tandem paragliding flight is the highlight of their Nepal trip.
What makes Pokhara special for flying is a rare geographic accident: a launch ridge at Sarangkot that sits about 1,000m above a warm lake, an 8,000m mountain wall a short glide to the north, and consistent morning thermals through the dry season. You do not need to be an adrenaline seeker to love it — most flights are gentle, floating and quiet, more soaring than plunging.
Launch Sites
Sarangkot (1,592m)
The main launch site, 30 minutes from Pokhara Lakeside by taxi. Offers the widest panorama including Machhapuchare (Fishtail Peak), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna I. The standard tandem flight launches from Sarangkot and lands at Phewa Lake's northern shore (Pame). Duration: 25–35 minutes.
Harpan/Begnas Lake
A quieter alternative launch site 15km east of Pokhara. More remote feel, fewer pilots and tourists. Views slightly different — Begnas and Rupa lakes below. Less reliable thermals than Sarangkot but often available when Sarangkot is cloudy.
Types of Flights
- Tandem scenic flight (25–35 min): Standard tourist experience. Sits in a harness in front of the pilot. No experience needed. NPR 6,000–8,000 ($45–60).
- Tandem + acrobatics (35–45 min): After the scenic portion, pilot performs wing-overs and spirals. Not for weak stomachs. NPR 8,000–10,000 ($60–75).
- Thermal/duration flight (1–2 hrs): Experienced pilots can find thermals for extended flight. Cost: NPR 12,000–18,000 ($90–135).
- Sunrise/golden hour flight: Dawn launch gives extraordinary low-angle Himalayan light. Premium pricing: NPR 9,000–12,000.
Which flight is right for you?
| Flight type | Duration | Typical walk-in price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scenic tandem | 25–35 min | NPR 6,000–8,000 ($45–60) | First-timers, families, anyone who wants the view without the drama |
| Tandem + acrobatics | 35–45 min | NPR 8,000–10,000 ($60–75) | Confident stomachs who want wing-overs and spirals |
| Thermal / duration | 1–2 hrs | NPR 12,000–18,000 ($90–135) | Photographers and enthusiasts chasing extended airtime |
| Sunrise / golden hour | 25–35 min | NPR 9,000–12,000 | Best light of the day; worth the early alarm |
Our arranged tandem paragliding experience starts at $110 per person for a solo booking (less per head in a group) — a little above the cheapest walk-in rate because it buys you a vetted, PAN-certified pilot, hotel pickup and a guaranteed booking rather than a scramble at a Lakeside desk on a day the sky is already busy.
Best Time to Paraglide in Pokhara
October–May: Best conditions. October and November are peak months — crisp, clear air, excellent visibility, reliable thermals. March–May excellent for rhododendron views from the air. Winter (December–February) is flyable on clear days but cold at altitude.
June–September (Monsoon): Flying is heavily weather-dependent and often cancelled for days at a time. Not recommended for booking paragliding in monsoon season unless you have flexible timing.
| Season | Months | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | Oct–Nov | Crisp, clear, reliable thermals | Best of the year — book ahead |
| Good | Mar–May | Warm, rhododendron colour, some afternoon haze | Excellent; fly in the morning |
| Flyable | Dec–Feb | Clear but cold at altitude | Fine on a clear day; dress warm |
| Poor | Jun–Sep | Monsoon; frequent cancellations | Only with flexible dates |
Safety Standards
Nepal's paragliding industry is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and the Paragliding Association of Nepal (PAN). All commercial operators must hold PAN certification. Pilots must have completed minimum training hours and pass annual medical checks.
To verify your operator is legitimate: ask for their PAN membership number and verify it on the PAN website. Ask how long your specific pilot has been flying. Reputable operators have pilots with 5–15+ years of tandem experience in Pokhara's specific conditions.
What Happens on the Day
- Meet at Lakeside office for briefing (15 minutes)
- Taxi to Sarangkot launch (30 minutes)
- Equipment fitting and safety brief from your pilot (10 minutes)
- 10–15 minute wait for launch window
- 25–35 minute flight
- Landing at Phewa Lake shore
- Taxi return to Lakeside
Total time from meet to return: approximately 3 hours. Wear layered clothing — it's 5–8°C cooler at Sarangkot altitude even in summer.
Make a day of it in Pokhara
A tandem flight takes about three hours door to door, which leaves most of your day free — and Pokhara has more sky and lake activities packed into one valley than anywhere else in Nepal. If paragliding gives you the taste for it, the same launch season suits an ultralight aircraft flight over the lakes and mountains, a dawn hot air balloon ride, or the adrenaline of the Pokhara Zip Flyer, one of the steepest and longest ziplines in the world. For quieter mornings, the World Peace Pagoda day hike gives you the same Phewa-and-Annapurna panorama from the ground. Many visitors fly in the morning and pair it with a boat across Phewa Lake and an easy afternoon in Lakeside.
Pokhara is also the natural launchpad for the Annapurna region, so a paragliding flight slots neatly onto the front or back of a trek. It is a perfect low-effort reward day after a big walk like Annapurna Base Camp, or a gentle, altitude-free highlight if you are not trekking at all. Tell us what else is on your Nepal itinerary and we will time the flight for your best-weather morning.
The unprofitable bit of advice
If you are at all prone to motion sickness, skip the acrobatic add-on and take the plain scenic flight. The wing-overs and spirals are a short-lived thrill, but the memory almost everyone keeps is the quiet soaring with the Annapurnas across the valley — and we would rather you land grinning than green. The extra money for spirals is money you do not need to spend.
Video and Photos
All operators offer GoPro video and photo packages for approximately NPR 1,000–1,500 ($7.50–11) extra. Your pilot attaches a GoPro to their helmet or a stick mount. Strongly recommended — the aerial views are among the best Nepal photographs you'll take.
Who paragliding is NOT for
- Anyone with a serious heart condition, recent surgery, or who is pregnant — check with a doctor first; the launch run and landing put real load on the body.
- Travellers over roughly 100–110kg — most operators have a weight limit for tandem safety; confirm before you book.
- People on a fixed single day in monsoon. If your only free day is in July with a flight out that evening, the odds of a cancellation are high. Build in flexibility or plan it for the dry season.
- Bargain-hunters who would fly with an unverified pilot to save NPR 1,000. This is the one activity where the cheapest desk on the strip is not the place to save money.
Booking
Walk-in booking is available at dozens of offices along Lakeside, but quality and certification vary widely and the cheapest desk is rarely the safest. Whoever you fly with, confirm they are PAN-certified and ask how many years your specific pilot has flown Pokhara. The simplest way to remove that risk is to book our tandem paragliding experience — we use vetted, certified pilots and can package it with a Pokhara stay or a wider Pokhara itinerary.
