The short version
Mardi Himal vs Annapurna Base Camp in 2026 — duration, altitude, cost, crowds and scenery compared, with an honest verdict from a Pokhara operator since 1998.
- Short on time or craving quiet? Choose Mardi Himal — a 4–5 day ridge walk with a breathtaking close-up of Machhapuchhre and far fewer trekkers.
- Want the famous bucket-list moment? Choose Annapurna Base Camp — the 360° amphitheatre of 7,000m peaks is one of the great sights in the Himalaya.
- Both are moderate teahouse treks on the same ACAP + TIMS permits, starting and ending near Pokhara — no flights, no restricted-area fees.
- Mardi is the better value and slightly higher; ABC is more famous, busier and a couple of days longer for the deeper valley experience.
Two of the finest treks in the Annapurna region start within an hour of our Pokhara office, and travellers ask us this question almost every week: Mardi Himal or Annapurna Base Camp? They share a great deal — the same permits, the same teahouse comfort, the same moderate grade and the same astonishing mountains — yet they deliver very different experiences. Mardi Himal is the quiet ridge above the Modi valley; Annapurna Base Camp is the celebrated walk into the Sanctuary itself. Below we compare them honestly, side by side, so you can pick the right one for your fitness, your calendar and the kind of memory you want to bring home. If you are weighing several routes, our wider trek comparison hub sets these two against the rest.

Difficulty & altitude
Both treks are firmly moderate — you need reasonable fitness and the willingness to walk 4–7 hours a day on stone steps and forest paths, but no technical skill and no climbing. The numbers are closer than they look. Mardi Himal actually tops out a little higher, at roughly 4,500m at the Upper Viewpoint above Mardi Himal Base Camp, while Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m. The difference is the shape of the climb: Mardi gains height quickly along a single ridge, so a short itinerary can feel steep, whereas ABC builds altitude more gradually over more days in the valley. On either route, altitude is real — read our altitude sickness guide and never rush the final climb. For most healthy walkers, both are very achievable with a guide setting a sensible pace.
Scenery & highlights
This is where the two treks diverge most. Mardi Himal is a high, narrow ridge that lifts you above the rhododendron forest into an open alpine world, with Machhapuchhre — the sacred Fishtail — looming so close it feels almost touchable, flanked by Annapurna South and Mardi Himal itself. It is intimate and dramatic. Annapurna Base Camp, by contrast, walks you deep into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a glacial amphitheatre ringed 360° by giants: Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. Standing in that bowl at dawn is one of the most famous experiences in Nepal. Mardi gives you the best single Fishtail view in the region; ABC gives you the complete, encircling panorama.
Crowds & trail feel
If solitude matters to you, this may decide it. Mardi Himal is one of the quieter trails in the Annapurna region — it only opened to wider trekking in the last decade, the teahouses are smaller and family-run, and even in peak season you can have a viewpoint largely to yourself. Annapurna Base Camp is a classic, and classics draw crowds: in October and April the trail and lodges are busy, sometimes full, and you will share the dawn at base camp with many others. Neither is unpleasant — ABC's buzz has its own camaraderie — but Mardi feels wilder and more private, while ABC feels celebrated and social. See our short treks roundup for more low-traffic options like Mardi.
Cost & permits
Both treks use exactly the same paperwork: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) plus the TIMS card, with no restricted-area surcharge and no expensive flights involved. Our full breakdown lives on the permits page. The cost difference comes down to length and logistics. A guided Mardi Himal trek starts from around USD 350, while Annapurna Base Camp starts from around USD 560 — the extra reflecting two or three more days of guide, porter, lodging and meals. Mardi is the better-value option and the lighter commitment; ABC costs more but delivers the bigger-name destination. For a wider sense of trip budgets, see our trekking cost guide.
Accommodation
Both are teahouse treks, so you sleep in simple mountain lodges with a bed, blankets and a warm dining room serving dal bhat and other hot meals — no tents, no carrying your own food. The texture differs slightly. Mardi's teahouses are newer, fewer and more basic the higher you climb, which is part of its charm but means hot showers and Wi-Fi thin out near the top. ABC's lodges are more established and numerous, having served trekkers for decades, with more reliable facilities along the way. On both routes we book ahead in peak season — especially on ABC, where popular lodges fill fast.
Getting there
Logistically these two are twins, which is part of why they are so often compared. Both start and finish from Pokhara, a relaxed lakeside city roughly 6–7 hours by tourist bus or a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu. From Pokhara, a short drive delivers you to the respective trailheads — Kande or Phedi for Mardi, Nayapul or Siwai for ABC — and you are walking the same day. There are no domestic mountain flights and none of the weather-delay risk you get on, say, the Everest region. That simplicity makes both treks excellent choices if your dates are tight or you would rather not gamble on Lukla.
Who should choose Mardi Himal
Choose Mardi if your holiday is short, if you want a quieter trail, or if a single, jaw-dropping close-up of Machhapuchhre is the photo you have been dreaming of. It fits neatly into a 4–5 day window, costs less, and still rewards you with genuine high-alpine ridge scenery. It is ideal for first-time Himalayan trekkers who want a real summit-view experience without a long commitment, and for return visitors who have already done the busier classics and want something more off the beaten path. Browse the route on our Mardi Himal trek page.
Who should choose Annapurna Base Camp
Choose ABC if standing inside the Annapurna Sanctuary, encircled by 7,000m and 8,000m peaks, is the moment you have come to Nepal for — and you can spare the extra couple of days. It is the more iconic trek, the one with the famous name, and the deeper immersion in the high valley. The trade-off is more company on the trail and a slightly bigger budget, but the payoff is a panorama few walks on earth can match. Start with our Annapurna Base Camp trek guide and the wider Annapurna region guide for context.
The verdict
Honestly, there is no loser here — both are superb moderate teahouse treks on the same permits out of Pokhara, and you would be glad you did either. Our recommendation depends on you. If you are short on time, watching your budget, or you value quiet and that ridge-top Fishtail view, take Mardi Himal — it punches far above its modest length. If you want the bucket-list classic, the encircling Sanctuary panorama, and you do not mind sharing the trail and adding a couple of days, take Annapurna Base Camp. First-timers with a tight calendar lean Mardi; travellers chasing the iconic name and willing to invest more time and money lean ABC. Still torn? Tell us your dates and fitness and we will match you to the right route — as a local Pokhara operator since 1998, picking the right trek for each traveller is what we do best. You can compare every option on our trek comparison hub.
Is Mardi Himal harder than Annapurna Base Camp?
Both are moderate. Mardi tops out slightly higher (~4,500m vs 4,130m) and gains height quickly along a steep ridge, so a short itinerary can feel demanding, while ABC builds altitude more gradually over more days. Neither is technical, and both are achievable for fit beginners with a guide setting the pace.
Which trek is cheaper, Mardi Himal or ABC?
Mardi Himal is cheaper, starting from around USD 350 versus around USD 560 for Annapurna Base Camp. The difference reflects ABC being two or three days longer, with more guide, porter, lodging and meal costs. Both use the same ACAP + TIMS permits with no extra fees.
Do both treks need the same permits?
Yes. Both Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp require the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS card — there is no restricted-area surcharge on either. We arrange both for you. See our permits page for current fees and details.
Which has better mountain views?
It depends on what you want. Mardi Himal gives the closest, most intimate view of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South and Mardi Himal from a high ridge. Annapurna Base Camp gives a complete 360° amphitheatre of peaks from inside the Sanctuary. Mardi wins on the single Fishtail close-up; ABC wins on the encircling panorama.
Can I combine Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp?
Yes — experienced trekkers with around 10–12 days can link the two via the Annapurna foothills for a quieter alternative entry to the Sanctuary. It is more demanding and needs careful planning, so we tailor the itinerary to your fitness. Get in touch and we will build a combined route for you.
