How to turn 2027’s federal holidays into three long trips abroad

American annual leave is scarce enough that the calendar matters more than the destination. There is no federal law requiring a single paid day off, and most private-sector workers get ten to fourteen after a year, so the practical question is not where you would like to go — it is which weeks of the year give you back more days than you spend. In 2027 there are eight of those weeks, and one of them is unusually generous: four days of leave at the end of December buys ten consecutive days away, because Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both land on a Saturday and both get observed on the Friday before.

The end of 2027 is the one to book early

New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so the Office of Personnel Management observes it on Friday 31 December 2027. Christmas Day 2027 also falls on a Saturday, observed on Friday 24 December. That leaves exactly four working days — Monday 27 to Thursday 30 December — sitting between two holiday Fridays.

Book those four days and you are away from Friday 24 December to Sunday 2 January: ten consecutive days for four days of leave. No other week in 2027 comes close, and it is the one window where a genuinely long trip is possible on a normal American allowance.

Every one of those was worked out day by day rather than estimated: a script walked each range and rejected it if any date was neither a weekend, a federal holiday, nor a day of booked leave. Washington’s Birthday on Monday 15 February behaves identically to the other Monday holidays — four days of leave, nine days off — and is the one we left off the table only because the pattern is already obvious by then.

The best ratio is the worst trip

Veterans Day and Thanksgiving both return four days off for a single day of leave, which is the best arithmetic on the page and almost useless for going anywhere far. Two of those four days are spent in the air on a trip to Asia, and the jet lag lasts longer than the holiday. Spend those weekends domestically and keep the four-day blocks for the windows that are long enough to be worth the flight.

There is a second reason to avoid the Thanksgiving window specifically: it is the busiest week of the American flying year. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is routinely the heaviest single day at airport security in the country, so a trip built around it starts and ends in the worst queues of the year. We went through the actual TSA numbers in which days are quietest at US airport security — Tuesdays and Saturdays are the ones to fly.

What actually fits in nine days

Here is the part most planning guides skip. A nine-day window is not nine days somewhere else. From the US to South Asia you lose roughly a day each way in the air, and the first day on the ground is a write-off while your body clock catches up — the eastward adjustment runs about an hour a day, as we set out in how long jet lag actually lasts flying east. Call it six usable days.

Six days is a real trip. It is not a Himalayan expedition, and pretending otherwise is how people spend their whole year’s leave and come home without reaching anything.

The honest version: Everest Base Camp does not fit in a nine-day window, and no operator should tell you it does. The 12-day itinerary needs two weeks door to door. If Everest is the goal, use the Christmas window as your base and add leave either side, or wait for a year when you can take a full fortnight. If what you want is the Himalaya inside the leave you actually have, Ghorepani Poon Hill at 3,200 m gives you the Annapurna skyline at dawn with no altitude risk worth the name, and it genuinely fits.

The windows to avoid for this part of the world

Juneteenth and Independence Day look good on paper and are the two worst weeks of the year to come to Nepal. Mid-June to early July is the monsoon: the mountains are behind cloud, the trails are leeches and mud, and the flights to Lukla cancel for days at a time. Spend those windows in Europe, Japan or somewhere in the southern hemisphere, and keep January, October and the December bridge for the Himalaya.

January is cold but it is the year’s clearest air and the emptiest trails, which is exactly what the Christmas window is good for. Memorial Day at the end of May is the last usable week before the monsoon arrives, and Labor Day in early September is the first week the weather starts turning good again — it can still rain.
